Most DR Congo trips are a week or two: business in Kinshasa, or a flight east to Goma for Virunga and Lake Kivu, or south to Lubumbashi. Only two brands sell unlimited data for the country itself. For two weeks, Holafly asks $64.90 for 15 days and Ringo Light $63.99 for 2 weeks, 91 cents less. Airalo's only unlimited here is its Discover global plan, at $96 for 15 days.

Read what unlimited means before you pick. Airalo's Discover gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light has no speed cap: the 2 weeks starts with 10 GB and the 30 days with 20 GB, and when you have used 80% we add 10 GB once and charge the $63.99 top-up. A heavy two weeks with us costs $127.98 and a heavy month $188.98, both more than Holafly's month at $113.90. If you stream every evening, Holafly is the better deal.
For a short trip, Ringo Light sells no 3-day or 7-day plan. Holafly sells 3 days of unlimited at $19.90 and 7 days at $40.90.
DR Congo has four mobile networks: Vodacom, Airtel, Orange and Africell. All four cover Kinshasa, and the bigger cities such as Lubumbashi, Goma and Bukavu have 4G. Holafly rides Airtel and Orange, Airalo's country plans and Nomad ride Airtel, and Ubigi rides Africell. Saily does not name its network. None of the six names Vodacom.
The country is the size of Western Europe and most of it is forest and river. Signal thins out soon after you leave a city, and Holafly's own page warns of weak coverage in Virunga, Kahuzi-Biéga and on journeys along the Congo river. Download offline maps and anything you need before you leave town, whichever eSIM you buy. A DR Congo plan covers DR Congo only: crossing from Goma to Rwanda or from Kinshasa to Brazzaville needs a plan for that country.
A Congolese SIM has to be registered to an identity document. A visitor shows a passport at a Vodacom, Airtel, Orange or Africell shop and waits for the line to be set up. A travel eSIM installs at home before you fly, needs no shop, and connects when you land at N'djili airport in Kinshasa, in Goma or in Lubumbashi.
Many Congolese pay by phone with M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Orange Money, which need a local number that a travel data eSIM does not give you. US dollars circulate alongside Congolese francs; carry clean, recent notes and some francs for small purchases. Cards work mainly in the larger hotels of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Before you go, check your government's travel advice.

What to do in DR Congo, and what your phone needs for it. Eight places most first trips include, from Kinshasa and the Congo river in the west to Nyiragongo, Lake Kivu and Kahuzi-Biéga in the east and Lubumbashi in the south, with the one thing your data does for you at each. The cities have 4G; the parks mostly do not, so plan your downloads.
Boulevard du 30 Juin, Kinshasa. The capital's main avenue runs through the Gombe district, past banks, ministries and hotels, a few blocks from the river. It is the easiest place to start a first day in a city of more than fifteen million people. Street addresses are loose in Kinshasa. A dropped pin on a map app, sent to your driver, gets you there faster than a street name.
The Congo river rapids, Kinshasa. Just below the city the river leaves Pool Malebo and breaks into wide rapids, with Brazzaville on the far bank. The dry months, roughly June to September, show the most rock. Your eSIM stops at the water: the far bank is Brazzaville, another country, with its own networks.
Lola ya Bonobo, Southern edge of Kinshasa. The world's only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos, found only in DR Congo, set in forest on the edge of the city. Visits are booked ahead. Book the visit and the car there by message the day before, and keep the booking on your phone.
Zongo Falls, Kongo Central, southwest of Kinshasa. The Inkisi river drops into a forested gorge at Zongo, a long day trip or a weekend from Kinshasa. The falls run fullest in the rainy season. Signal fades on the road out. Download the route offline and share your live location before you leave the city.
Nyiragongo, Virunga National Park, near Goma. An active volcano with a lava lake in its crater, climbed in a day with park rangers and a night in shelters on the rim. Treks are booked through Virunga National Park. Keep the park booking and permits offline on your phone; the rim has little or no signal and it is cold at night.
Lake Kivu at Goma, North Kivu. Goma sits on the north shore of Lake Kivu, under Nyiragongo, and boats run south along the lake to Bukavu. The fishermen's pirogues go out in the evening. Near the border your phone can pick up Rwandan networks. Lock it to your eSIM's network or turn off automatic network selection.
Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, Near Bukavu, South Kivu. A UNESCO World Heritage park of mountain and lowland forest, home to eastern lowland gorillas that rangers track with small groups of visitors. Expect no signal in the forest. Save your permit and the meeting point offline before you leave Bukavu.
Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga. The country's second city and the heart of the copper belt, with wide avenues, old colonial buildings and a national museum. Most visitors fly in from Kinshasa. Book and check the flight to Kinshasa or onward on your phone the day before; schedules change.
