4 · What to do in Mauritania, and what your phone needs for it

Eight places most first trips include, from the fishing beach of Nouakchott and the Banc d'Arguin to the old desert towns of the Adrar, the Eye of the Sahara, the iron ore train and Nouadhibou, with the one thing your data does for you at each. Distances are long and signal is thin between towns, so offline maps matter more here than almost anywhere. Before you go, check your government's travel advice.

5 · If you want unlimited: Ringo Light is the only true one, and it is expensive

Most Mauritania trips run one to two weeks: a day or two in Nouakchott, then north to Atar and the old towns of the Adrar, sometimes the iron ore train and the coast at Nouadhibou. None of the rivals sells unlimited data for Mauritania. The closest is Ubigi's Best World plan: 30 GB at full speed for 15 days at $77, or 60 GB for 30 days at $108, then 2 Mbps. Ringo Light charges $106.99 for 2 weeks and $211.99 for 30 days, one payment each, nothing renews.

So we lose both lengths. Ubigi is $29.99 cheaper for two weeks and $103.99 cheaper for a month, with three times our starting data. Nomad sells 10 GB for 30 days at $49 and Ubigi 10 GB at $39, which is enough for maps, messages and photos home on most trips. We would rather you read that here than at checkout.

Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole trip. For a short trip, Ringo Light sells no 3-day or 7-day plan; Nomad sells 1 GB for 7 days at $9.

6 · Mauritel, Mattel, and the empty Sahara

Mauritania has three mobile networks: Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel. Airalo and Nomad name Mauritel, Ubigi names Mattel. In Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Atar and along the main roads you get 4G or 3G. Between towns the country is mostly desert, and signal can be gone for hours on the road to Chinguetti and Ouadane, on the iron ore train and in the Banc d'Arguin. Save offline maps before you leave a town, whichever eSIM you buy.

7 · If you want a data bucket: Ubigi or Nomad

  • Ubigi, $39 for 10 GB. On its Best World plan, 30 days, on Mattel. Its own Mauritania plans are small: 1 GB for 7 days at $12, 3 GB for 15 days at $24. 20 GB a month on its World plan is $44, and it renews.
  • Nomad, $49 for 10 GB. For 30 days on Mauritel 4G. Smaller sizes: 1 GB for 7 days at $9, 3 GB for 30 days at $19, 5 GB for 30 days at $29. The cheapest Mauritania plans of their own.
  • Airalo, $41 for 5 GB. For 30 days on its Hello Africa regional plan, on Mauritel; 5 GB for 15 days is $37. No 10 GB for Mauritania. The app is needed.
  • Saily, $19.99 for 1 GB. For 7 days, its only Mauritania plan. Its esimdb listing is from May; saily.com refused the fetch.

Which Mauritanian network will my travel eSIM use?+

Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.
