Most people come to Mayotte for a week or two: the lagoon, the beaches of the south, a night walk to see turtles, family in Mamoudzou. Others come for a month or more, on a posting at the hospital, a school or the prefecture. For 15 days of unlimited, Airalo asks $49 and Holafly $50.50. For a month the gap is wider. Holafly is the only rival that sells a month of unlimited on a Mayotte plan, at $73.90. Ubigi's Europe Extended month is $77 for 60 GB at full speed. Read what unlimited means before you pick. Airalo gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Ubigi gives a fixed amount, then 2 Mbps. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light has no speed cap: the 2 weeks starts with 10 GB and the 30 days with 20 GB, and when you have used 80% we add 10 GB once and charge the $18.99 top-up. For a short trip, Ringo Light sells no 3-day or 7-day plan. Airalo and Holafly both sell 3 days of unlimited at $12.50. For a week, our 2 weeks at $18.99 costs less than any rival's 7 days: Airalo asks $27, Holafly $27.50, and Ubigi $49 for 20 GB at full speed on its Europe Extended plan.
Mayotte became a French department in 2011 and an outermost region of the European Union in 2014. That means EU roaming rules apply there: a phone plan from any EU country roams in Mayotte at home prices, within the usual fair use limit. Some operators still list the French overseas departments on a separate page of their price list, so check yours before you fly. If your plan is from the EU and your operator confirms it, you may not need a travel eSIM at all.
Plans from the UK, the US, Canada, the Comoros or Madagascar usually charge roaming in Mayotte, and that is where a travel eSIM saves money. A Europe travel eSIM does not always include Mayotte. Ubigi's Europe Extended plan does; our Europe trip does not, so check that your plan names it.

What to do in Mayotte, and what your phone needs for it. Eight places most first trips include, from the lagoon and Mamoudzou to the beaches of the south and the crater lake on Petite-Terre, with the one thing your data does for you at each. The island is small, but roads are slow and the far south and the hills have weaker signal.
The lagoon, All around the island. One of the largest lagoons in the world, closed by a coral reef with white sandbanks inside it. Boats go out to snorkel, to the îlot de sable blanc, and to see humpback whales, which come to calve from about July to October. Whale and lagoon trips are often booked by message the day before. Keep the operator's number and meeting point saved on your phone.
Mamoudzou, Grande-Terre, east coast. The capital and the island's main town, with the market, the shops and the quay where the barge from Petite-Terre lands. Go to the market in the morning for fruit, spices and fabric. Prices are in euros and cards work in the shops, but many market stalls take only cash. Find a cash machine before you go.
Dzaoudzi and Petite-Terre, Petite-Terre, facing Mamoudzou. The old colonial capital sits on a rock joined to Petite-Terre, which also holds the airport at Pamandzi. The barge crosses the lagoon between Dzaoudzi and Mamoudzou all day. Check the barge timetable on your phone before the evening, when crossings get fewer.
Mont Choungui, South of Grande-Terre. A sharp volcanic peak whose summit looks over the southern lagoon and the reef. The climb is steep and short; start early, before the heat. Signal can drop on the trail. Download the offline map and the route before you leave the car.
N'Gouja beach, Kani-Kéli, south-west. A beach under giant baobabs where green turtles graze the seagrass a few metres from the sand. Snorkel quietly and keep your distance from them. Look up the tide times: the turtles are easiest to see when the water is high over the seagrass.
Saziley, South-east point of Grande-Terre. A protected headland with empty beaches and clear water, reached on foot along a coastal trail. Turtles nest on these beaches at night. There is little shade and patchy signal. Save the trail on an offline map and tell someone your route.
The Dziani crater lake, Petite-Terre. A green lake filling an old volcanic crater, with a path around the rim. It is a short walk from the Moya beaches and the airport. Walk it early or late in the day. A weather app tells you when the afternoon showers are due.
The Moya beaches, Petite-Terre, east coast. Sand beaches under steep volcanic cliffs, and one of the places where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs at night. Keep your torch and flash off near nesting turtles. Book a guided night visit where one is offered.
