Most people who come to Montserrat stay a few days to two weeks, for the volcano, the hikes in the Centre Hills and the quiet. Data is what you use for maps, WhatsApp with guides and drivers, the ferry and flight messages, and a film in the evening. For about two weeks of unlimited, Holafly asks $68.90 for 15 days, Ubigi $75 for 30 GB at full speed on its Caribbean plan, and Airalo $96 on its Discover global plan. For a month, $108 to $159. Read what unlimited means before you pick. Airalo gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Ubigi gives 20 GB for 7 days, 30 GB for 15 days or 60 GB for the month, then 2 Mbps. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light has no speed cap: the 2 weeks starts with 10 GB and the 30 days with 20 GB, and when you have used 80% we add 10 GB once and charge the $48.99 top-up. A heavy two weeks with us costs $97.98, more than Holafly's 15 days at $68.90 and Ubigi's at $75, and a little more than Airalo's $96. A heavy month costs $142.98, more than Ubigi's $108 and Holafly's $111.90, and less than Airalo's $159. If you stream every day, Holafly is the better buy here.

There is no long-haul flight to Montserrat. Almost everyone comes through V. C. Bird airport on Antigua, then takes a short flight on a small propeller plane to John A. Osborne airport in the north, or the ferry from St John's to Little Bay on the days it sails. A plan for Montserrat alone, ours or Holafly's, does nothing on Antigua. It connects once your phone finds a Montserrat network and stops again on the way back. For the landing day, keep something for Antigua: airport Wi-Fi, your home plan, or a second plan. The southern part of the island, around the Soufrière Hills volcano and the old capital Plymouth, is an exclusion zone. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory sets the hazard level and which zones are open, and the buried town can only be visited on a tour with an approved guide. Everyone lives in the north, and that is where the networks are strongest.
Montserrat has two mobile networks, FLOW and Digicel. Both cover the inhabited north, around Brades, Little Bay and Salem, and the airport. Holafly's own page warns that coverage weakens in mountainous and forested areas, on hiking routes, on some boat trips, and names parts of the Centre Hills, the Silver Hills and the trails near Rendezvous Bay. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the local currency and US dollars are widely taken. There is no ride hailing app on the island, so taxis and guides are booked by phone.

What to do in Montserrat, and what your phone needs for it. Seven places most first trips include, from the volcano and the buried capital in the south to Little Bay and the green north where everyone lives, with the one thing your data does for you at each. Signal is good in the north and thinner on the trails and near the exclusion zone.
The Soufrière Hills volcano, South of the island. The volcano woke in 1995 and buried the southern half of the island. Its slopes are green again above grey flows of ash and rock, and it is watched around the clock. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory posts the current hazard level and open zones online. Check it the morning you head south.
Plymouth, the buried capital, Exclusion zone, southwest coast. The old capital was abandoned in 1997 and lies under volcanic deposits, with rooftops and upper floors still showing. You can only go in on a tour with an approved guide. Guides are booked ahead by phone or WhatsApp. Download the island in your maps app before you go, since there is no town left down there.
Jack Boy Hill viewpoint, East coast. A lookout over the grey fan of flows that buried the old W. H. Bramble airport and pushed the coast out into the sea. There is no ride hailing on Montserrat. Hire a car, or save a taxi driver's number and book the day by phone.
Little Bay, Northwest coast. The port where the ferry from Antigua docks, with a dark sand beach. Rendezvous Bay, the island's one white sand beach, is a hike over the headland to the north or a boat ride. Ferry times change. Keep data on for the operator's messages, and download the trail before the Rendezvous hike, where signal thins.
National Museum of Montserrat, Little Bay. A small museum on the island's history and the eruption that changed it, a short walk from the port. Opening days vary for a small museum. Look it up or call ahead before you walk over.
The green north, Brades, Salem and the Centre Hills. Everyone on Montserrat now lives in the northern third of the island, around Brades, Salem and Davy Hill, below the forested Centre Hills and their trails. Holafly's own page warns signal thins in the Centre Hills and on hiking routes. Save the trail and an offline map before you start.
John A. Osborne Airport, Gerald's, north of the island. The small airport built to replace the buried one, with short flights to and from Antigua on small propeller planes. Small planes run to the weather. Keep data on for rebooking messages and screenshot your booking before you board.
