1 · The short answer

Harbin, in the far north east of China, holds its ice and snow season in the depths of winter. It usually runs from about January to February, with the main venues opening in late December or early January, depending on the weather. The dates are set each year, so check the official announcements of the Harbin tourism authorities before you book.

Ringo Light's China plan covers the country with unlimited data at full speed. Harbin is very cold, so the practical work is keeping your phone alive and your payment apps ready.

Ringo Light's China plan covers the whole of China: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $22.99 or 30 days for $35.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/china, and every brand's price for Shanghai is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Shanghai.

2 · What it is

The season centres on large ice and snow sculpture parks, lit up in the evening, plus sculpture displays along the river and in the city. Opening dates for individual venues depend on the weather and are announced locally.

Evenings are when the lights are best and also the coldest. Temperatures in Harbin in January commonly fall well below freezing, so plan short outdoor stretches with warm stops.

3 · Getting there and around

  • ✓Train. High-speed trains run to Harbin from Beijing and other northern cities. Book on the 12306 rail app or through a travel agent, and have your passport ready, since tickets are tied to it.
  • ✓Flights. Harbin Taiping International Airport serves the city. Winter weather can delay flights, so keep your airline app and booking available offline.
  • ✓In the city. Harbin has a metro, taxis and the Didi ride app. Link a foreign card or use a ride service your hotel recommends.

4 · Your phone in deep cold

Lithium batteries lose charge quickly in deep cold, and a phone can shut down with battery still showing. Keep it in an inside pocket, close to your body, between photos, and carry a power bank in the same pocket.

When you come indoors, let the phone warm up slowly before charging it. Touchscreen gloves help, since bare hands get numb within minutes.

5 · Apps, payments and reaching the usual sites

  • ✓Payments. Most shops, taxis and stalls expect a QR code, not cash. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you land.
  • ✓Chinese apps. WeChat, Alipay, Didi, Amap and the 12306 rail app work on every plan.
  • ✓Google, WhatsApp and Instagram. A Chinese SIM sits behind the Great Firewall. A travel eSIM is different: roaming data usually leaves the country through the provider's gateway abroad, so these apps usually open without a VPN. That is the usual case for roaming eSIMs, not a promise. We have not tested Ringo Light from inside mainland China, so keep a VPN installed before you fly as a fallback.
  • ✓Maps. Google Maps is thin in China. Use Apple Maps or Amap.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

Ringo Light's China plan covers the country with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email, installs in one scan and needs no app. Install it before you fly. The price is shown on the plan page. If you continue to Beijing or elsewhere in China, the same plan covers it.
