1 · The short answer
The Chinese Grand Prix runs from 16 to 18 April 2027 at the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading, in the northwest of Shanghai. It is the third of three races on consecutive weekends, after Australia and Japan.
Ringo Light's China plan covers Shanghai and the rest of mainland China with unlimited data. Roaming eSIMs usually carry your data through a network outside the mainland, which is why the apps most visitors rely on tend to open on them.
Dates: Friday 16 to Sunday 18 April 2027, round 5 of the 2027 Formula 1 season. The 2026 race ran on 13 to 15 March. Organiser's page
Ringo Light's China plan covers the whole of China: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $22.99 or 30 days for $35.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/china, and every brand's price for Shanghai is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Shanghai.

2 · Getting to the Shanghai International Circuit
Shanghai has two airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, both on the metro. The circuit has its own stop, Shanghai Circuit station on Metro Line 11, and the ride from the city centre takes about an hour, so leave early on qualifying and race day.
Taxis and ride-hailing through DiDi work too, but traffic around the circuit is heavy after the race. The metro is the dependable way back.
3 · Google, WhatsApp and maps in China
On a Chinese SIM or hotel wifi, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and many Western news sites are blocked. Roaming eSIMs normally route data abroad, so these apps usually open on them, but nobody can promise that for every day and every app.
Before you fly, download offline maps, save your ticket and hotel address in Chinese characters, and install a local map app such as Amap or Apple Maps, which work well in Shanghai.
4 · Paying by phone
- ✓Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both now accept foreign cards. Set them up at home, because most shops, taxis and food stalls expect a QR code payment.
- ✓Cards. International hotels and larger shops take cards, smaller places often do not.
- ✓Cash. Carry a little yuan as a fallback for small stalls.
5 · Signal at the circuit
China's networks are fast and dense, but a full grandstand still slows uploads at the start and the finish. Keep your e-ticket and the circuit map offline, and agree a meeting point with your group.
6 · The other apps a fan needs
- ✓Official F1 app. Session times in your time zone, results and news. Live timing needs an F1 TV subscription and data.
- ✓Metro. Shanghai's metro takes QR code payment through Alipay or WeChat, or a ticket from the machines.
- ✓Translation. A translation app with the camera mode helps with menus and signs.
