Airalo vs Ringo Light in one paragraph

For two weeks or a month of unlimited data in China, Ringo Light is cheaper than Airalo by a wide margin: $22.99 against $49 for about two weeks, $35.99 against $69 for 30 days, and Ringo Light's unlimited has no daily cap where Airalo slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Airalo wins everything shorter and everything measured in gigabytes: 3 days of unlimited at $11.50, a week at $27, 10 GB for $26.50 and 20 GB for $40. Ringo Light sells none of those. Airalo names its network, China Unicom, and runs on an app that shows your balance; Ringo Light rides a local partner network and arrives by email. Pick Airalo for a few days in Beijing or for a bucket. Pick Ringo Light for the classic two-week loop or a month.

Price: the same trip at each

Priced on 25 October 2026, in US dollars, from Airalo's own site and our catalogue. For 3 days of unlimited, Airalo asks $11.50; Ringo Light sells no 3-day plan. For a week, Airalo asks $27; Ringo Light sells no 7-day plan, and its 2 weeks at $22.99 costs less than Airalo's week, with a week of days left over. For about two weeks, Airalo asks $49 for 15 days and Ringo Light $22.99 for 2 weeks, less than half. For 30 days, Airalo asks $69 and Ringo Light $35.99.

For a fixed amount of data, Airalo is the only one of the two that sells it: 10 GB for 30 days at $26.50, 20 GB at $40. Ringo Light sells no buckets. If 10 GB is all you need and you want it to last the month, Airalo costs a few dollars more than our 2 weeks at $22.99 but runs twice as long, and for a traveller who uses a few hundred megabytes a day that is the better buy. For 20 GB, Airalo at $40 costs more than our unlimited 30 days at $35.99, so there the unlimited wins on both count and price. We would rather you read that here than at checkout.

What unlimited means at each

Airalo's unlimited for China gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then slows to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. That covers maps, messages, translation and an hour or two of video; an evening of streaming in HD, or a day of uploading photos from the Great Wall, will hit it. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days, no daily figure. Fair use policy, see Terms.

Networks and coverage in China

China has three networks: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. All three cover the cities, the high-speed rail lines and the usual first-trip stops. Airalo names its network: China Unicom. Ringo Light rides a local partner network, as the full comparison says. For Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, either works. If a named network matters to you, Airalo is the one that tells you which.

On the firewall: a Chinese SIM bought at the airport sits behind the Great Firewall, so Google, Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram do not open on it. A travel eSIM is different in one way that matters: its data usually leaves the country through the provider's gateway abroad, so these apps usually open without a VPN. That is the usual case for roaming eSIMs, not a promise from Airalo or from us. We have not tested Ringo Light from inside mainland China ourselves. Keep a VPN installed as a fallback before you fly; the app stores in China will not offer one. The Chinese apps, WeChat, Alipay, Didi, Amap and 12306, work on both.

Installation, app and support

Airalo needs its app: you buy, install and top up inside it, it shows your balance, and its support chat lives there too. Ringo Light needs no app; the eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan from your phone's settings, and support is by email. Whichever you pick, install it at home before you fly: Gmail may not open on hotel Wi-Fi in China, so an eSIM you still have to download on arrival is a bad start. Switch it on for data when you land in Beijing or Shanghai.

What Ringo Light is, and what it is not

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM, sold to fund the full Ringo, one plan that works everywhere with your own number ported onto it. For China it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $22.99 and 30 days at $35.99. One payment, nothing renews, no app.

What it is not: it is not a phone number, and it sells no buckets, no 3-day plan and no 7-day plan. Data only; calls go over apps that use data. If you want 3 days, Airalo at $11.50 is the buy. If you want a week, Airalo at $27 is the only week of the two, though our 2 weeks at $22.99 costs less. If you want exactly 10 GB for a month, Airalo at $26.50 is the better fit.

Does Ringo Light have a data limit?+
Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days, with no daily figure. Fair use policy, see Terms.
