1 · The short answer

Santo António is celebrated in Lisbon on the night of 12 June, the high point of the Santos Populares, the June street festivals. Streets in old neighbourhoods such as Alfama, Mouraria and Graça fill with arraiais, the street parties, with grilled sardines and music, and the Marchas Populares parade usually goes down Avenida da Liberdade. Check the city's programme, run under the Festas de Lisboa banner, for the current year's events.

The simplest setup for a visitor is a data eSIM for Portugal installed at home, with your own SIM left on for calls and bank codes. Ringo Light's Portugal plan has unlimited data at full speed; it arrives by email and installs in one scan, so your phone is online when you land. EU visitors can also use their home plan under EU roaming rules, if it has enough data.

Ringo Light's Portugal plan covers the whole of Portugal: unlimited data at full speed, 3 days for $8.99, 2 weeks for $16.99 or 30 days for $26.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/portugal, and every brand's price for Lisbon is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Lisbon.

2 · The lanes and the signal

The old neighbourhoods are narrow, hilly and packed on 12 June, and thousands of phones share a few cells. The Portuguese networks cope well on a normal day, but in a crowded lane calls drop and uploads stall.

In practice: messages and maps usually arrive, a video call may not, and a photo backup can sit for minutes. Pause photo upload on mobile data and send big files later from your hotel Wi-Fi.

3 · What your phone has to do

  • ✓The official programme. The city publishes the programme of the Festas de Lisboa, including the parade and the main stages. Check it for the current year and save the page.
  • ✓Maps offline. Download the Lisbon map in your maps app on Wi-Fi. Streets in the old town are closed or one way on the night, and an offline map keeps working when data is slow.
  • ✓Bookings. Hotels book up around 12 June. Save your confirmation and any restaurant booking as a screenshot or PDF so it opens without signal.
  • ✓Paying. Cards are widely used in Lisbon, but street stalls and arraiais often prefer cash. Carry some euros and keep your phone wallet as a backup.

4 · Getting there and around

Lisbon's metro, trams, buses and the Cascais line train all work with the rechargeable Viva Viagem card, which you can buy at stations and load with the fare you need. Some trams and streets in the old town are crowded, diverted or closed on the night, so walking is often quicker, and the transport operators' sites (Metro de Lisboa, Carris and CP) publish any changes and late service for the current year.

Taxis and ride apps are slow to find in the old town at night, so plan your way back before you go out. The transport apps and maps work on mobile data, and they are much quicker to use before you are in the crowd.

5 · Meeting points, battery and safety

  • ✓Agree a meeting point before you go out. Pick a named square or station exit, because in a crowded lane nobody finds a friend by phone alone.
  • ✓Share your location in advance. Turn on location sharing with your group early, while the signal is easy.
  • ✓Carry a small power bank. A long night outdoors with a weak signal drains a battery fast.
  • ✓Mind the cobbles and the crowds. Streets are steep and slippery. Keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag. The European emergency number is 112.

6 · Which plan covers Santo António

Ringo Light's Portugal plan covers the whole country: Lisbon, the trip to Sintra or Cascais, and anywhere else you go in Portugal. If your trip continues to Spain, a Europe plan covers the borders on one eSIM. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, switch data to it when you land, and keep your own line for calls.
