1 · The short answer

The ski season in Bansko usually runs from December into April, depending on snow. The resort sits at the foot of the Pirin mountains, and the gondola from the town is the main way up. The resort site, banskoski.com, shows the season and lift hours; its page listed the gondola running from 08:30 to 17:00 when we checked.

Bulgaria is in the EU, so a SIM from another EU country roams at home rates. For visitors from elsewhere, Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan gives unlimited data at full speed and installs by scan before you fly.

Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan covers the whole of Bulgaria: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $16.99 or 30 days for $26.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/bulgaria, and every brand's price for Sofia is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Sofia.

2 · What the season looks like

The gondola station is on the edge of the town and is the busiest point of the day. Queues are longest in the morning on weekends and in school holiday weeks. Lift hours and open runs change with the weather, so look at the resort site each morning.

Upper lifts can close in wind or low cloud. Keep a plan B for the lower slopes.

3 · From Sofia to Bansko

  • ✓Airport transfers. Most visitors fly into Sofia and take a pre booked transfer. The drive is usually about two and a half to three hours, longer in snow.
  • ✓By bus or train. Public transport exists, with a change in some cases. Check the operators' timetables before you book.
  • ✓By car. Winter tyres or chains are required in winter. Check the current rules and conditions before you drive.
  • ✓In town. The resort is compact. Many hotels are a short walk or a ski bus ride from the gondola.

4 · What your phone has to do

  • ✓Lift passes. Passes are usually a card or a code. Keep the code or booking saved offline on the phone.
  • ✓Signal on the mountain. Coverage is good around the base and the main runs, but it can drop in valleys and on the upper slopes. Download the piste map.
  • ✓Cold and batteries. Phones lose charge fast in the cold. Keep it in an inside pocket and bring a power bank.
  • ✓Emergencies. The number across the EU, including Bulgaria, is 112. Mountain rescue can be reached through it.

5 · Roaming in Bulgaria

EU roaming applies in Bulgaria for SIMs from other member states, within fair use. UK and non EU visitors often pay more for roaming than for a local eSIM.

6 · Which plan covers Bansko

Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan covers the whole country, including Sofia, Bansko and the Pirin range, with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan, so it works as soon as you land in Sofia.
