1 · The short answer
The Rose Festival in Kazanlak usually takes place in late May or early June, when the damask roses of the Rose Valley are in bloom. The harvest begins at dawn, before the heat dulls the scent, and the town hosts a parade and concerts. Check the town and tourism board sites for the exact dates before you plan.
Bulgaria is in the EU, so a SIM from another EU country roams here at home rates. For everyone else, Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan has unlimited data at full speed and installs by scan before you fly.
Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan covers the whole of Bulgaria: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $16.99 or 30 days for $26.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/bulgaria, and every brand's price for Sofia is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Sofia.

2 · What happens in the Rose Valley
Kazanlak is the town at the heart of the Rose Valley, between the Balkan range and the Sredna Gora hills. Visitors can join the rose picking in the fields in the early morning, watch the parade in town and visit distilleries where rose oil is made.
Rose picking starts very early. Ask the organiser or your host for the meeting point the night before, and save it in your maps.
3 · Getting there from Sofia
- ✓By bus or train. Kazanlak is roughly two to three hours from Sofia by road. Bulgarian Railways and the bus operators run services; check times in advance in the days around the festival.
- ✓By car. Driving is the easiest way to reach the fields around the town. Roads are mostly good, but expect slow traffic on parade days and park at the edge of the centre.
- ✓Local transport. Taxis in the area are cheap, and a local taxi app saves language trouble. Agree the fare or use the meter.
- ✓Check first. Bus and train timetables change, so check the operators' sites before you travel.
4 · What your phone has to do
- ✓Maps in the fields. Signal can fade between villages. Download an offline map of the valley before you go.
- ✓Paying. Cards work in most shops and hotels in Kazanlak, but small village stalls and rose oil sellers often prefer cash in levs. Carry some.
- ✓Tickets and bookings. Keep hotel and tour bookings saved offline.
- ✓Emergencies. The emergency number across the EU, including Bulgaria, is 112.
5 · Roaming in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is in the EU, so EU roaming applies for SIMs from other member states, within fair use. Visitors from the UK, the US and other countries usually pay more for roaming than for a local eSIM.
6 · Which plan covers the Rose Valley
Ringo Light's Bulgaria plan covers the whole country, from Sofia and the Rose Valley to the Black Sea, with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan, so you can use it from the moment you land.
