1 · The short answer

Thaipusam is usually held in January or February, on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Thai, so the date moves each year. Malaysia's public holiday list names the day each year; confirm it there before you book. At Batu Caves, just north of Kuala Lumpur, celebrations start the night before the main day.

It is a religious festival first and a sight second. Dress modestly, keep to the paths, never block devotees carrying offerings, and ask before photographing people in prayer. The crowds run to the millions, so plan to go by train, carry little and charge your phone before you leave.

Ringo Light's Malaysia plan covers the whole country with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan.

2 · What happens at Thaipusam

Thaipusam honours Lord Murugan. At Batu Caves, devotees walk or carry offerings to the temple in the main cave, which is reached by 272 steps. Some carry milk pots, others carry a kavadi, a decorated frame carried as an act of devotion. Music, chanting and prayer go on through the night and day.

Entry to the caves is normally free. The exact programme, timings and any rules for visitors are set by the temple and the authorities each year, so check current announcements.

3 · Getting to Batu Caves

  • ✓KTM Komuter: The Batu Caves line runs from KL Sentral and ends at Batu Caves station, next to the temple. For Thaipusam, KTMB has in recent years run extended or round the clock services and free Komuter days; check the current announcement for the dates.
  • ✓LRT and MRT first: Officials have asked visitors to use the LRT or MRT and change to the Komuter at interchange stations, which eases the crowding at KL Sentral.
  • ✓Driving: Roads near the caves close or jam early. A train is the sensible choice, and Grab drop offs work only some way from the site.
  • ✓Airport: Kuala Lumpur International Airport links to KL Sentral by the KLIA Ekspres, then you change to the Komuter.

4 · Respectful conduct

  • ✓Dress: Cover shoulders and knees. Light, loose clothes suit the heat. Expect to take your shoes off at the temple.
  • ✓Give way: Devotees carrying kavadi and milk pots have priority on the steps and paths. Step aside and do not touch them.
  • ✓Photos: Ask before photographing a devotee in prayer or trance. Do not use a flash or a drone near the ceremonies.
  • ✓Food and offerings: Do not feed the macaques around the caves; they snatch bags and phones.

5 · What your phone has to do

  • ✓Grab: Grab is the usual ride app in Kuala Lumpur. Pick up and drop off points near the caves move during the festival, so check the pin in the app.
  • ✓Signal in the crowd: With a crowd of this size, mobile data slows at the peak hours. Download offline maps and screenshot your meeting point before you arrive.
  • ✓Cashless: Touch n Go, cards and QR payments are common in Kuala Lumpur, but food and offering stalls at the festival often prefer small notes. Carry a little cash.
  • ✓Keep it safe: Use a zipped pocket or a strap. Do not hold your phone loosely on the steps.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

Ringo Light's Malaysia plan gives unlimited data at full speed across the country, so it covers Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo and the islands on one eSIM. If your trip also takes in Singapore or Thailand, the Global plan covers the countries on your route.
