1 · The short answer

The Marrakech International Film Festival usually takes place in late November or early December, with screenings, tributes and red carpet nights in the city. Dates and venues change each year, so check the festival's own site for the current edition, and for how to book screenings or the public programme.

Marrakech is a city of petits taxis, narrow medina lanes and plenty of people who will offer to guide you. A phone with data helps with all of it: maps, ride apps, messages with your hotel or riad and your tickets. Morocco is outside EU roaming, so a visitor needs a local option. Ringo Light's Morocco plan gives unlimited data at full speed; it arrives by email and installs in one scan.

Ringo Light's Morocco plan covers the whole of Morocco: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $26.99 or 30 days for $50.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/morocco, and every brand's price for Morocco is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Morocco.

2 · What to expect

The festival fills the city with screenings and events, with the main evening events usually held around the Palais des Congres and in historic venues. Some events are by invitation and some are open to the public. Check the official programme for what is free, what needs a ticket and where to collect it.

Keep your confirmation emails and any QR codes saved on your phone, not just in your inbox.

3 · Getting around: petits taxis and ride apps

Marrakech's petits taxis are the small beige cars used inside the city. Agree whether the meter is running before you set off; many drivers prefer to name a price. Ride apps such as inDrive, where you propose a fare, and Careem are used by many visitors, and having data makes them usable. Their availability can vary, so keep more than one option.

From Marrakech Menara Airport, taxis and buses reach the centre, and many riads and hotels can send a driver. Ask your host in advance and keep the message on your phone.

4 · The medina and maps

  • ✓Download offline maps. The lanes are narrow and signal can fade in the thickest parts. An offline map still shows your blue dot.
  • ✓Saving your riad. Save your riad's address, its phone number and a photo of its door. Taxis often stop at the nearest gate and you walk the rest.
  • ✓Guides on the street. Say no politely to unofficial guides. Your map is enough.
  • ✓Paying. Cash in dirhams is normal in the souks and for taxis. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants. Withdraw from bank cash machines.

5 · Signal and battery in a busy city

Mobile coverage in Marrakech is good, and Jemaa el-Fnaa in the evening is the place where data slows because of the crowd. Download your tickets and maps before heading out.

Photographing the medina and filming screenings use battery. Carry a power bank, and charge at your riad before dinner.

6 · Around the festival

Gardens, museums and the souks fill the days between screenings. The Majorelle Garden and the Bahia Palace are popular, and tickets or opening hours may need checking on the day. For a break from the city, Essaouira on the coast or the Atlas foothills are day trips; confirm transport and the weather with your host.
