1 · The short answer

The Seoul Lantern Festival sets lit lanterns along the Cheonggyecheon stream in central Seoul, between Cheonggyecheon Plaza and Samil Bridge, with a market nearby at Gwanghwamun Square. The dates change each year; it has usually run from late autumn into winter, so check the festival's own site for this year's days, hours and any entry rules.

Evenings by the stream are cold and crowded, and your phone will do much of the work: maps, taxis, translation and payment. Ringo Light's South Korea plan covers Seoul and the whole country with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan.

Ringo Light's South Korea plan covers the whole of South Korea: unlimited data at full speed, 3 days for $9.99, 2 weeks for $23.99 or 30 days for $35.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/south-korea, and every brand's price for Seoul is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Seoul.

2 · What to expect

The festival is held along the stream, which runs below street level through the city. Visitors walk down the stairs from the road and follow the water past the lantern displays, so the route is a long walk with few exits in the middle. Plan to enter at one end and leave at the other.

Evenings and weekends are busiest. Early in the evening, as the lights come on, or later on a weekday, tends to be calmer. Check the festival's site for current opening hours and for any change to the route.

3 · Getting there and around

  • ✓By subway. Several Seoul Metro stations are close to the stream, including City Hall, Gwanghwamun and Jonggak. Pick the entrance nearest your end of the walk.
  • ✓Airport. Incheon Airport connects to central Seoul by the AREX train, by bus and by taxi.
  • ✓Taxis. Kakao T is the main taxi app, but traffic around the centre is heavy on festival evenings. The subway is often quicker.
  • ✓Transport card. A T-money card, or a phone version if your phone supports it, pays for the subway and buses.

4 · What your phone has to do

  • ✓Maps. Google Maps is limited for walking directions in Korea, so use Naver Map or KakaoMap. Both work in English, and you can save the area offline.
  • ✓Translation. Papago handles Korean well, including by camera, and downloads offline.
  • ✓Cashless. Cards are taken almost everywhere in Seoul, including street food stalls near the festival, though some stalls still prefer cash.
  • ✓Plans. Keep your hotel address in Korean ready for a taxi driver.

5 · Signal in the crowd

Korea's networks are fast, but a narrow stream walk packed with visitors can still slow the signal. Load the map and the route before you go down, agree where to meet if you separate, and share photos later when you are back above ground.

6 · Around Cheonggyecheon

Gwanghwamun Square and Gyeongbokgung Palace are a short walk away, and Insadong and Bukchon are close for tea or a late meal. In the cold months, keep a power bank in an inside pocket, because batteries drain faster in low temperatures.
