1 · The short answer

The Boryeong Mud Festival is held every summer at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, on Korea's west coast, usually from the second half of July into early August. It began as a way to promote the region's mineral rich mud, and is now one of Korea's best known festivals among visitors, with mud pools, slides, wrestling and concerts. Check the official festival site for the next edition's dates and ticketed zones.

Your phone faces mud, seawater and crowds all at once. A waterproof pouch, a locker for valuables and offline maps cover most of it. Korea's mobile networks are fast and reliable, even on a busy beach.

2 · What happens

The heart of the festival is the Mud Experience Land, a paid zone of mud pools, obstacle courses and slides. Around it, the beach hosts free events, mud painting, parades and evening concerts and fireworks on some nights. It is crowded on weekends, especially with groups coming from Seoul for the day.

3 · Protecting your phone

  • ✓Waterproof pouch: Mud is abrasive and gets into ports and speaker grilles. A sealed pouch on a lanyard lets you take photos without exposing the phone.
  • ✓Lockers: Lockers and changing rooms are available around the festival area; leave your wallet and spare phone there.
  • ✓Rinse later: Do not open a muddy pouch until you have rinsed it with fresh water.
  • ✓Crowds: Signal is strong on the beach, but at peak weekend hours with thousands of phones, uploads slow. Post videos in the evening.

4 · Getting there from Seoul

  • ✓Train: Trains on the Janghang Line run from Yongsan in Seoul to Daecheon station in a little under three hours. A short bus or taxi ride takes you to the beach.
  • ✓Express bus: Buses run from Seoul's Express Bus Terminal and Central City to Boryeong or Daecheon, a journey of around two and a half hours depending on traffic.
  • ✓Book ahead: Weekend trains and buses during the festival fill up. Book on the Korail or bus booking apps and keep the e-ticket offline.

5 · Korean apps that work for visitors

  • ✓Naver Map or Kakao Map: Google Maps has limited walking and driving directions in Korea. Naver Map and Kakao Map work in English for transit and walking.
  • ✓Kakao T: Korea's main taxi app; it can work with foreign cards in many cases.
  • ✓T-money: The transit card for buses and subways across Korea, sold and topped up at convenience stores.
  • ✓Payments: Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at the beach stalls.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

The Ringo Light plan for South Korea covers Boryeong, Seoul, Busan and the whole country on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed, enough for Naver Map, Kakao T and video calls. If you are combining Korea with Japan or other countries, the Global plan covers your route.
