1 · The short answer
The Abu Simbel Sun Festival is held on 22 February and 22 October each year. On those mornings, at sunrise, light travels the length of the temple of Ramses II and reaches the statues in the inner sanctuary, which stay in shadow for most of the year. Crowds gather at the temple in the dark, so plan to arrive early and check with your hotel or tour company for the exact schedule that year.
Abu Simbel is in the far south of Egypt, close to the Sudanese border, and most visitors start from Aswan. Whether you go by road or by air, you will want tickets, a map, your driver's number and a way to reach your hotel, all on your phone.
Ringo Light's Egypt plan covers the whole country with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan, so you can set it up before you fly. A local SIM in Egypt needs passport registration, which is one more reason to have data ready on arrival.
Ringo Light's Egypt plan covers the whole of Egypt: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $18.99 or 30 days for $40.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/egypt, and every brand's price for Cairo is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Cairo.

2 · What happens on the day
The two dates are widely linked to events in the reign of Ramses II, though popular accounts differ on the details, and the temple is aligned so that the rising sun lights the sanctuary on these mornings. The light reaches the seated statues at the back for a few minutes. It is a short moment that draws a large crowd, with music and local celebrations around the site on the festival days. Expect a long wait in the dark before sunrise and a queue to get in.
Programmes and entry arrangements can change from year to year. Check the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and your tour operator close to the date rather than relying on last year's account.
3 · From Aswan by road
- ✓The route: Abu Simbel is a long drive south of Aswan across the desert, roughly three hours each way, so festival day usually means leaving in the middle of the night.
- ✓Convoys and rules: Rules on how and when vehicles may travel this road have varied over the years. Check the current arrangements with your hotel or tour company before you book.
- ✓Stay overnight: Some visitors sleep in Abu Simbel town the night before to avoid the early drive. Rooms fill up well ahead of the two dates.
- ✓Cash and tickets: Keep your ticket confirmation and your driver's phone number saved offline, in case signal is patchy on the road.
4 · By air and on the ground
- ✓Flights: There is a small airport at Abu Simbel with flights from Aswan and Cairo at times. Schedules change, so check the airline's own site and book early for the festival dates.
- ✓Day trips: Many Aswan hotels and Nile cruise operators sell day trips that bundle transport and entry. Ask what is included and the pick up time.
- ✓Around Aswan: Taxis and ride apps work in Aswan town. Agree a price before you get in if you are not using an app.
5 · What your phone has to do
- ✓Tickets and maps: Download an offline map of Aswan and Abu Simbel and keep tickets as screenshots as well as in your email.
- ✓Photos: Many sites limit photography inside the temple. Follow the staff instructions, and expect to switch the phone off or keep it away in some areas.
- ✓Signal: Coverage is good in towns, thinner on the desert road, and slow in a crowd at sunrise. Send messages before the moment and upload photos after.
- ✓Before you fly: Set up your eSIM at home. A local SIM needs passport registration, which is awkward to sort out after a night flight.
6 · Which plan covers the trip
Ringo Light's Egypt plan covers Aswan, Abu Simbel, Cairo and the rest of the country with unlimited data at full speed, enough for maps, ride apps and video calls. If you are adding other countries, the Global plan covers your route.
