1 · The short answer

Fuji Rock Festival is held at the Naeba Ski Resort in Niigata Prefecture, usually over a weekend in the second half of July. The 2026 edition ran from 24 to 26 July according to the organiser's site. Check the official site for the next edition's dates and ticket rounds.

You reach it by taking the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa, about an hour and a half, then a festival shuttle bus to the venue. The organiser warns that the bus can take over an hour at busy times, and that you can miss the last train home after a show.

2 · What happens

Fuji Rock runs across several outdoor stages spread over the ski slopes and forest paths of Naeba, with international and Japanese acts, food stalls and camping. It is a walking festival: stages are a real distance apart, paths can be muddy, and rain is part of the experience. Plan on a rain jacket and shoes you do not mind getting dirty.

3 · Getting to Naeba

  • ✓Train from Tokyo: The organiser's access page gives the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station as about 1.5 hours.
  • ✓Shuttle bus: From the station to the venue the festival runs shuttle buses, about 40 minutes, but the organiser says it can take over an hour at busy times and waits of over an hour are possible. Check the official access page for the fare and the hours for that year.
  • ✓Fast bus: The organiser has also offered an advance reservation fast bus that skips the queue, with limited seats. Check the official site to see whether it runs and when booking opens.
  • ✓Last train: The organiser warns that you may miss the last train from Echigo-Yuzawa after a show, depending on congestion. Look at the return timetable before you decide to stay for the last act, and keep a bed booked nearby as a backup.

4 · What your phone has to do

  • ✓Tickets: Download or screenshot your ticket and wristband details while you have signal. Mountain valleys can drop to a crawl when thousands of phones are in the same place.
  • ✓Battery: Bring a power bank. Days are long, you will take photos and videos, and the venue is too big to keep going back to your tent or hotel to charge.
  • ✓Maps: Google Maps works in Japan for trains and walking. Save the Naeba area for offline use, since the site is large and signal is patchy in the forest.
  • ✓Train apps: Google Maps or Japan Transit apps show Shinkansen and local train times. Suica or ICOCA can sit in your phone's wallet for gates and vending machines in the cities.
  • ✓Cash and cards: Cards and mobile payment are common in Tokyo, but festival stalls and small shops in the mountains may favour cash. Check the festival's payment notes and carry some yen.

5 · Apps that matter in Japan

  • ✓Google Maps: Reliable for trains, platforms and walking directions across Japan.
  • ✓Suica or ICOCA: Add one to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for gates, buses and convenience stores. It is not accepted everywhere in rural areas.
  • ✓Translation: Google Translate with the Japanese pack downloaded handles signs and menus without signal.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

Ringo Light's Japan plan covers Tokyo, Niigata and the rest of the country on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed, enough for maps, ticket apps and video calls. If you are adding other countries to the trip, the Global plan covers your route.
