1 · The short answer

The Quebec Winter Carnival is held each year from late January to mid February, and the 2027 edition runs from 5 to 14 February, according to the organiser. Its mascot is Bonhomme Carnaval, the snowman who presides over parades, ice sculptures and outdoor events in Quebec City.

The cold is the thing to plan for. Phone batteries drain fast in freezing air, and tickets, maps and the programme are all on your phone. Canada is outside EU roaming, so visitors need a local option. Ringo Light's Canada plan gives unlimited data at full speed; it arrives by email and installs in one scan.

2 · What happens

The carnival spreads over ten days across the city, with parades, ice and snow sculpture, night events and outdoor activities. Most of it takes place outdoors in winter conditions. The official programme and map are on carnaval.qc.ca, and the program can change with the weather.

Many visitors know the Bonhomme effigy, a small figure traditionally worn as an access pass to events. Check the organiser's ticketing page for how access and tickets work for 2027.

3 · Getting to Quebec City and around it

Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport is on the edge of the city, with taxis and ride services to the centre. Trains and buses from Montreal reach the city, though winter weather can slow roads, so allow extra time and check your carrier before you travel.

The Old Town is walkable, but it is icy and hilly. Wear boots with grip. Ride services such as Uber operate in Quebec City, and the city's bus network, the RTC, covers the main routes. Check the RTC site for fares and for any carnival changes.

4 · Your phone in the cold

  • ✓Battery. A phone in a pocket next to your body lasts far longer than one in your hand. Carry a power bank and keep it warm too.
  • ✓Touch screens. Gloves meant for touch screens help. Bare fingers for more than a minute or two risk frostbite when it is very cold.
  • ✓Tickets offline. Save tickets and maps offline. A phone that shuts down in the cold will not show them until it warms.
  • ✓Paying. Cards and phone payments are accepted nearly everywhere in Quebec City. Food stalls may take cash only, so carry a little.

5 · Signal in the crowds

Coverage in Quebec City is strong. During evening parades and the busiest outdoor events, data slows because of the crowd, and videos fail more often than messages. Agree a meeting point with your group in case calls drop.

Many events are in French. A translation app that works offline helps, and so does a connection when you need to look something up.

6 · Around the carnival

Chateau Frontenac and the Old Town are the classic views, and the Plains of Abraham sit just beside them. Montmorency Falls, outside the city, is a popular winter stop; check access and transport before you go.
