1 · The short answer
The Istanbul Biennial is held every two years, in autumn of odd numbered years. The organiser lists the 19th edition as 18 September to 14 November 2027, curated by LIU Ding and Carol Yinghua LU. Its main venue was announced as Artistanbul Feshane. Check the organiser's site for the venue list and ticket details.
Venues are spread across the city, so you will cross the Bosphorus, ride trams and metro, and walk a lot. Your phone needs tickets, maps and a transit card.
Ringo Light's Turkey plan covers Istanbul and the rest of Turkey on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email and installs in one scan.

2 · What happens
The biennial shows new work by artists from many countries in galleries, historic buildings and other sites around Istanbul, alongside talks and public programmes. The organiser's site marks some entry as ticketed and some as free admission. Read it before you go, as venues and rules change between editions.
3 · Planning your route
- ✓Group by area: Pick venues on the same side of the Bosphorus for each day to avoid crossing back and forth.
- ✓Opening days: Check opening hours and any closed days on the organiser's site and save them as a screenshot.
- ✓Tickets: Check the organiser's ticket page for what is sold, what is free and whether you can buy on your phone.
- ✓Pace yourself: A day usually covers two or three venues comfortably.
4 · Getting around Istanbul
- ✓Istanbulkart: The transit card for metro, trams, buses and ferries. Buy and top up at machines at stations.
- ✓Ferries: Public ferries between the European and Asian sides are scenic and cross the city quickly.
- ✓BiTaksi: A taxi app that works in Istanbul and helps when hills or distance make walking hard.
- ✓Maps: Google Maps works well for transit in Istanbul; download the areas you will visit.
5 · Why not a local SIM
Turkey requires foreign phones used with a Turkish SIM to be registered, which can be awkward on a short trip. An eSIM installed before you fly avoids that and works as soon as you land.
6 · Which plan covers the trip
Ringo Light's Turkey plan covers Istanbul and the rest of Turkey with unlimited data at full speed, enough for maps, ticket QR codes and translation apps. If your trip also takes in other countries, the Global plan covers your route.
