1 · The short answer
The Istanbul Marathon is usually held on a Sunday in early November. Runners cross the Bosphorus bridge from the Asian side into Europe, and the course finishes in the old city near Sultanahmet. The 2026 edition was listed for 1 November. Check the organiser's site for the next edition's date, route and start times, as these can change.
On race day, roads close and public transport changes. Your phone needs your bib details, offline maps, a transit card and a way to meet friends after the finish.

2 · What happens
The marathon starts on the Asian side near the Bosphorus bridge and runs across it into Europe, a crossing that is normally closed to people on foot. A shorter distance is usually run alongside it. The finish is in the historic peninsula by the Blue Mosque and Hippodrome. Read the organiser's page for the exact route, start waves and expo or bib pickup details.
3 · Getting to the start and back
- ✓Early start: Runners are usually directed to the start by organiser transport or metro. Follow the instructions the organiser publishes, as roads around the bridge close.
- ✓Istanbulkart: The transit card for metro, trams, buses and ferries. Buy and top up at machines at stations, and load it before race morning.
- ✓Ferries: Ferries cross between the Asian and European sides and are a calm way back after the finish.
- ✓BiTaksi: A taxi app that works in Istanbul. Expect closed roads and delays near the course, so choose a pickup away from the finish area.
4 · What your phone has to do
- ✓Bib and tracking: Save your bib number and any confirmation as a screenshot. Spectators can use the organiser's tracking if it is offered; check the official site.
- ✓Meeting point: Agree a meeting point before the race and share your live location, since signal can slow in crowds near the finish.
- ✓Maps: Download an offline map of the Sultanahmet area and your route to the hotel.
- ✓Payments: Cards and contactless are widely accepted in Istanbul. Keep a little cash for small stalls.
5 · Why not a local SIM
Turkey requires foreign phones used with a Turkish SIM to be registered, and a local SIM can be awkward to set up on a short trip. An eSIM installed before you fly avoids that, and you can use maps and ride apps at the airport.
6 · Which plan covers the trip
Ringo Light's Turkey plan covers Istanbul and the rest of Turkey with unlimited data at full speed, enough for maps, taxi apps and sharing photos. If your trip also takes in other countries, the Global plan covers your route.
