Airalo vs Holafly in one paragraph

Airalo is the cheaper plan at every length, and by more as the trip gets longer: $0.90 less at 3 days, $4.90 less at 30. What Holafly sells is simplicity, with no daily cap stated and no app. Airalo also has buckets, and its 20 GB at $30.50 is under Ringo Light's month at $32.99, though its 10 GB at $19.50 costs more than Ringo Light's 2 weeks at $16.99. Ringo Light, unlimited data at full speed, is cheaper than both brands at 3 days, two weeks and a month.

Price: the same trip at each

Airalo's unlimited costs $11 for 3 days, $26.50 for a week, $48 for 15 days and $69 for 30 days. Holafly asks $11.90, $27.50, $50.50 and $73.90 for the same lengths. That makes Airalo $0.90 less at 3 days, $1 less at a week, $2.50 less at 15 days and $4.90 less at a month.

Ringo Light sells three trips for Iceland, all unlimited data at full speed: 3 days at $8.99, 2 weeks at $16.99 and 30 days at $32.99. Three days is $2.01 under Airalo's $11 and $2.91 under Holafly's $11.90. Its 2 weeks at $16.99 costs less than either brand's week, $26.50 at Airalo and $27.50 at Holafly. Against their 15 days it is $31.01 under Airalo's $48 and $33.51 under Holafly's $50.50. A month is $36.01 under Airalo's $69 and $40.91 under Holafly's $73.90. There is no 7-day plan.

Buckets are Airalo's alone. 10 GB for 30 days is $19.50, which costs more than Ringo Light's 2 weeks at $16.99, though it lasts 30 days against 2 weeks. 20 GB is $30.50, which costs less than Ringo Light's 30 days at $32.99, for the same 30 days. Holafly sells no buckets, and neither does Ringo Light. We would rather you read that here than at checkout.

What unlimited means at each

Airalo's unlimited for Iceland, the Nenna Mobile plan, gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then slows to 1 Mbps. Holafly states no daily cap for data on your own phone, and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. It sells days, not gigabytes. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 3 days, 2 weeks or 30 days. Fair use policy, see Terms.

Networks and coverage in Iceland

Iceland has three mobile networks: Síminn, Vodafone, run by Sýn, and Nova. All three cover Reykjavik, the towns and nearly all of Route 1, the Ring Road. Coverage thins on some passes in the East Fjords and in the Westfjords. Across most of the highlands, on the F-roads open only in summer, you will be out of signal for long stretches. None of the brands we priced changes that, because they all ride the same three networks.

Airalo names Síminn and Nova, Holafly names Nova and Sýn and Ringo Light rides a local partner network. Before a day off the main road, download the offline map for the region and leave a travel plan at safetravel.is. The road authority posts live closures and wind warnings at umferdin.is, and the 112 Iceland app sends your position to the emergency line when you do have signal.

Installation, app and support

Airalo needs its app: you buy, install and top up inside it. Holafly needs no app, because it sends a QR code you scan in your phone's settings. Ringo Light needs no app: the eSIM arrives by email in seconds, installs in one scan, and support is by email. Whichever you pick, install it at home before you fly and switch it on for data when you land.

The cheaper third option: Ringo Light

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM. For Iceland it sells three trips, all unlimited data at full speed: 3 days at $8.99, 2 weeks at $16.99 and 30 days at $32.99. You pay once, nothing renews and there is no app.

What it does not do: no buckets, no 7-day plan, no phone number. It is data only, and calls go over apps that use data. If you want 10 GB for a month, Airalo sells it at $19.50. If you want exactly a week, Ringo Light has no 7-day plan, and its 2 weeks at $16.99 is the nearest length.

Saily, Nomad and Ubigi are priced the same day in the full comparison for Iceland, at /blog/best-esim-for-iceland. The card to buy Ringo Light is further up this page, just after the side-by-side table.

Which to pick

  • Airalo, if you want a bucket or unlimited from one brand. Unlimited at $11 for 3 days and $26.50 for a week, buckets at $19.50 for 10 GB and $30.50 for 20 GB, on Síminn and Nova. You need its app.
  • Holafly, if you refuse a daily cap and want no app. No daily cap stated, a QR code to install, and the Nova and Sýn networks. You buy days, not gigabytes, and there are no buckets.
  • ✓Ringo Light, if the trip is 3 days, two weeks or a month and you want unlimited. Unlimited data at full speed, at $8.99, $16.99 or $32.99. No 7-day plan, and no buckets either.
