Airalo vs Holafly in one paragraph
Airalo is cheaper than Holafly for South Africa at every length both sell: by $0.90 on 3 days, $3.50 on a week, $12.50 on 15 days and $12.90 on 30 days. Holafly gives you the simpler product: unlimited days with no stated daily cap, installed from a QR code, with all four South African networks named: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Airalo gives you more choice, buckets of 10 GB at $22 and 20 GB at $37 as well as unlimited, but its unlimited slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day, and you need its app. Pick Airalo if you want a bucket or the lower price of the two. Pick Holafly if you stream all evening and never want to think about a daily cap. If the trip is two weeks or a month and you want unlimited, neither is the cheapest: Ringo Light sells 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99, unlimited data at full speed.
Price: the same trip at each
Priced on 22 October 2026, in US dollars. For 3 days of unlimited, Airalo asks $19 and Holafly $19.90. For a week, $36 at Airalo and $39.50 at Holafly. For 15 days, $51 at Airalo and $63.50 at Holafly. For 30 days, $99 at Airalo and $111.90 at Holafly. Airalo wins every row, and the gap widens with the length: $0.90 on 3 days, $12.90 on the month.
Ringo Light sells two trips for South Africa: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. The 2 weeks costs $13.01 less than Airalo's 15 days and $25.51 less than Holafly's. The 30 days costs $32.01 less than Airalo's month and $44.91 less than Holafly's. Against a single week the picture is closer: Airalo's 7 days at $36 costs $1.99 less than our 2 weeks, and Holafly's at $39.50 costs $1.51 more. Ringo Light sells no 3-day plan: for a long weekend in Cape Town, Airalo at $19 is the cheaper buy.
For a fixed amount of data, Airalo is the only one of the three that sells it: 10 GB for 30 days at $22, 20 GB at $37. Holafly sells no buckets. Ringo Light sells no buckets either. If 10 GB is all you need, Airalo at $22 is cheaper than Ringo Light's $37.99, and we would rather you read that here than at checkout.
What unlimited means at each
Airalo's unlimited for South Africa gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then slows to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. That is enough for maps, messages and an hour or two of video; a long evening of streaming in HD will hit it. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days. Fair use policy, see Terms.
Networks and coverage in South Africa
South Africa has four networks: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Holafly lists all four. Airalo names Vodacom and two others. Ringo Light rides a local partner network. Every network covers Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the main highways well. Signal thins out in the national parks, on mountain passes and on long stretches of the Garden Route and the Karoo, whichever eSIM you buy, so download offline maps before you drive.
The country has also lived through long spells of scheduled power cuts, called load-shedding. Cell towers run on backup batteries during a cut, and in a long one some of them go quiet. The EskomSePush app shows the schedule for the area you are in.
Installation, app and support
Airalo needs its app: you buy, install and top up inside it, and that is also where its support chat lives. Holafly lists its app as optional; a QR code installs it from your phone's settings. Ringo Light needs no app; the eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, and support is by email. A local SIM has to be registered under RICA with a passport and an address before it works; a travel eSIM installs at home before you fly and connects when you land at O.R. Tambo or Cape Town.
The cheaper third option: Ringo Light
Ringo Light is our own data eSIM. For South Africa it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. One payment, nothing renews, no app.
What it does not do: no buckets, no 3-day or 7-day plan, data only. If you want 10 GB for a month, Airalo at $22 is the better buy. If you want 3 days, Airalo at $19 or Holafly at $19.90 is cheaper than anything we sell. For two weeks or a month of unlimited, Ringo Light is the cheapest of the three.

How we compared, and our sources
Airalo, Holafly, Ringo Light
We priced Airalo, Holafly and Ringo Light for South Africa on 22 October 2026, all on the same day, in US dollars. Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.
We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.
Ringo Light is our own product. We put it in the table on the same terms as everyone else, and where a rival is the better buy the page says so.
Left out: Saily, Nomad and Ubigi. They sell South Africa too and are priced on the same day in the full comparison at /blog/best-esim-for-south-africa. This page answers one question, Airalo or Holafly, so it keeps to those two and the cheaper third option. Left out: Maya Mobile. We could not read its own prices for this country on the day, so it stays out rather than being guessed.
- Airalo: www.airalo.com/south-africa-esim?currency=USD, unlimited in dollars on the site, 22 October 2026; buckets from esimdb.com/south-africa/airalo, which refused the fetch that day, so the data-only figures are as last shown in its search listing
- Holafly: esim.holafly.com/esim-south-africa/, read on the site in dollars, 22 October 2026
- Ringo Light: our own catalogue, the prices the checkout charges on 22 October 2026.
