Airalo vs Ringo Light in one paragraph

For unlimited data in South Africa, Ringo Light is cheaper than Airalo at the lengths both cover. Two weeks is $37.99 against $51 for 15 days, a gap of $13.01. A month is $66.99 against $99, a gap of $32.01. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed; Airalo gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Airalo wins everything Ringo Light does not sell: 3 days at $19, a week at $36, data buckets from $8 for 3 GB up to 20 GB at $37, a named network, Vodacom and two others, and an app that shows your balance and tops you up. Pick Ringo Light if you want unlimited for two weeks or a month. Pick Airalo if you want a short plan, a bucket that lasts 30 days, or the comfort of the app.

Price: the same trip at each

Priced on 22 October 2026, in US dollars. For 3 days of unlimited, Airalo asks $19 and Ringo Light sells no 3-day plan. For a week, Airalo asks $36; Ringo Light sells no 7-day plan, and its 2 weeks at $37.99 costs $1.99 more than Airalo's week, with a week of days left over. For 15 days, Airalo asks $51 and Ringo Light $37.99 for 2 weeks. For a month, Airalo asks $99 and Ringo Light $66.99.

For a fixed amount of data, Airalo is the only one of the two that sells it: buckets from $8 for 3 GB over 3 days, 10 GB for 30 days at $22, 20 GB for 30 days at $37. Ringo Light sells no buckets. Its 2 weeks of unlimited at $37.99 costs $15.99 more than Airalo's 10 GB, and it lasts 2 weeks, not 30 days. If you need a little data to last a whole month, Airalo's 10 GB is the better buy, and we would rather you read that here than at checkout. The 10 GB chart above shows the two side by side for that reason.

The two-week chart carries Ringo Light's 2 weeks against Airalo's 15 days, as the full comparison does, because the two sell slightly different lengths. The month chart is like for like, 30 days at each.

What unlimited means at each

Airalo's unlimited for South Africa gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then slows to 1 Mbps until the next day. That is enough for maps, messages, photos and an hour or two of video; a long evening of streaming in HD will hit it, and a laptop on the hotspot will hit it sooner. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days, with no daily figure. Fair use policy, see Terms.

Networks and coverage in South Africa

South Africa has four networks: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Airalo names Vodacom and two others, and that is a point for Airalo: you know more about the network before you buy. Ringo Light rides a local partner network. Every network covers Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the main highways well. Signal thins out in the national parks, on mountain passes and on long stretches of the Garden Route and the Karoo, whichever eSIM you buy, so download offline maps before you drive.

The country has also lived through long spells of scheduled power cuts, called load-shedding. Cell towers run on backup batteries during a cut, and in a long one some of them go quiet. The EskomSePush app shows the schedule for the area you are in.

Installation, app and support

Airalo needs its app: you buy, install and top up inside it, see how much data is left, and reach its support chat there. Ringo Light needs no app; the eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan from the QR code, and support is by email. There is no balance to watch because there is no bucket. A local SIM has to be registered under RICA with a passport and an address before it works; a travel eSIM installs at home before you fly and connects when you land at O.R. Tambo or Cape Town.

What Ringo Light is, and what it is not

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM. For South Africa it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. One payment, nothing renews, no app.

What it is not: it is data only, so calls go over apps that use data. It sells no buckets, no 3-day plan and no 7-day plan. It names no network. There is no app and no balance screen, because there is nothing to count. If you want 3 days, 10 GB to last a month, or a Vodacom plan by name, Airalo is the better buy. For unlimited at two weeks or a month, Ringo Light is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.
