Airalo vs Nomad in one paragraph
Nomad is the cheaper of the two for a data bucket in South Africa: 10 GB for 30 days at $18 against $22 at Airalo, and 20 GB at $29 against $37. Airalo is the one that sells unlimited at every length: 3 days at $19, a week at $36, 15 days at $51 and 30 days at $99. Nomad sells unlimited only for 5 days at $19 and 10 days at $37, nothing longer, and gives 2 GB a day at full speed against Airalo's 3 GB. Both name Vodacom. Pick Nomad if you want a bucket or a 5-day plan at $19. Pick Airalo if you want unlimited for a week, two weeks or a month. If the trip is two weeks or a month and you want unlimited, neither is the cheapest: Ringo Light sells 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99, unlimited data at full speed.
Price: the same trip at each
Priced on 22 October 2026, in US dollars. For a short trip, Airalo's 3 days of unlimited and Nomad's 5 days both cost $19, so Nomad gives two more days for the same money. For a week, Airalo asks $36; Nomad has no 7-day plan, and its 10 days at $37 costs $1 more. For 15 days Airalo asks $51 and Nomad sells nothing between 10 days and a bucket. For 30 days of unlimited, Airalo asks $99 and Nomad sells none.
For a bucket the order flips. Nomad charges $18 for 10 GB and $29 for 20 GB, both for 30 days. Airalo charges $22 and $37. Nomad is $4 cheaper on 10 GB and $8 cheaper on 20 GB.
Ringo Light sells two trips for South Africa: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. The 2 weeks costs $13.01 less than Airalo's 15 days, and $0.99 more than Nomad's 10 days at $37, for 4 more days. The 30 days costs $32.01 less than Airalo's month. Ringo Light sells no 3-day plan and no buckets: for 10 GB, Nomad at $18 is cheaper than our $37.99 by $19.99, and we would rather you read that here than at checkout.
What unlimited means at each
Airalo's unlimited for South Africa gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then slows to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. Nomad's gives 2 GB a day, then 1 Mbps. That is enough for maps, messages and some video; a long evening of streaming in HD will hit either, Nomad sooner. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days. Fair use policy, see Terms.
Networks and coverage in South Africa
South Africa has four networks: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Nomad names Vodacom. Airalo names Vodacom and two others. Ringo Light rides a local partner network. Every network covers Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the main highways well. Signal thins out in the national parks, on mountain passes and on long stretches of the Garden Route and the Karoo, whichever eSIM you buy, so download offline maps before you drive.
The country has also lived through long spells of scheduled power cuts, called load-shedding. Cell towers run on backup batteries during a cut, and in a long one some of them go quiet. The EskomSePush app shows the schedule for the area you are in.
Installation, app and support
Airalo needs its app: you buy, install and top up inside it, and that is also where its support chat lives. Nomad lists its app as optional. Ringo Light needs no app; the eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, and support is by email. A local SIM has to be registered under RICA with a passport and an address before it works; a travel eSIM installs at home before you fly and connects when you land at O.R. Tambo or Cape Town.
The cheaper third option: Ringo Light
Ringo Light is our own data eSIM. For South Africa it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. One payment, nothing renews, no app.
What it does not do: no buckets, no 3-day or 7-day plan, data only. If you want 10 GB or 20 GB, Nomad at $18 and $29 is the better buy. If you want 3 or 5 days, Airalo or Nomad at $19 is cheaper than anything we sell. For two weeks or a month of unlimited, Ringo Light is the cheapest of the three.

How we compared, and our sources
Airalo, Nomad, Ringo Light
We priced Airalo, Nomad and Ringo Light for South Africa on 22 October 2026, all on the same day, in US dollars. Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.
We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.
Ringo Light is our own product. We put it in the table on the same terms as everyone else, and where a rival is the better buy the page says so.
Left out: Holafly, Saily and Ubigi. They sell South Africa too and are priced on the same day in the full comparison at /blog/best-esim-for-south-africa. This page answers one question, Airalo or Nomad, so it keeps to those two and the cheaper third option. Left out: Maya Mobile. We could not read its own prices for this country on the day, so it stays out rather than being guessed.
- Airalo: www.airalo.com/south-africa-esim?currency=USD, unlimited in dollars on the site, 22 October 2026; buckets from esimdb.com/south-africa/airalo, which refused the fetch that day, so the data-only figures are as last shown in its search listing
- Nomad: esimdb.com/south-africa/nomad, esimdb.com refused the fetch on 22 October 2026; unlimited 5 and 10 day prices as shown on nomadesim.com in dollars in search results, 10 GB on esims.io; nomadesim.com itself showed euros
- Ringo Light: our own catalogue, the prices the checkout charges on 22 October 2026.
