Holafly vs Nomad in one paragraph
Holafly and Nomad sell different things in South Africa. Nomad is cheaper on the short unlimited plans: 5 days at $19 against Holafly's 3 days at $19.90, which is $0.90 less for two more days, and 10 days at $37 against Holafly's week at $39.50, which is $2.50 less for three more days. Nomad also sells buckets, 10 GB for 30 days at $18 and 20 GB at $29, and Holafly sells none. But Nomad stops at 10 days of unlimited, and gives 2 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Holafly is the one to pick for 15 or 30 days: $63.50 and $111.90, with no stated daily cap and all four networks named. Pick Nomad for a bucket or a short trip. Pick Holafly for unlimited past 10 days. If the trip is two weeks or a month and you want unlimited, neither is the cheapest: Ringo Light sells 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99, unlimited data at full speed.
Price: the same trip at each
Priced on 22 October 2026, in US dollars. For a short trip, Nomad asks $19 for 5 days and Holafly $19.90 for 3. For a week, Holafly asks $39.50; Nomad has no 7-day plan, and its 10 days at $37 costs $2.50 less. For 15 days Holafly asks $63.50 and Nomad sells nothing between 10 days and a bucket. For 30 days of unlimited, Holafly asks $111.90 and Nomad sells none.
Ringo Light sells two trips for South Africa: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. The 2 weeks costs $25.51 less than Holafly's 15 days, $1.51 less than Holafly's week, and $0.99 more than Nomad's 10 days at $37, for 4 more days. The 30 days costs $44.91 less than Holafly's month. Ringo Light sells no 3-day plan and no buckets.
For fixed data, Nomad is the only one of the three that sells it: 10 GB for 30 days at $18, 20 GB at $29. If 10 GB is all you need, Nomad at $18 is cheaper than our $37.99 by $19.99, and we would rather you read that here than at checkout.
What unlimited means at each
Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. Nomad's unlimited gives 2 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. That is enough for maps, messages and some video; a long day of streaming or a laptop on the hotspot will hit it. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed for the whole 2 weeks or 30 days. Fair use policy, see Terms.
Networks and coverage in South Africa
South Africa has four networks: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Holafly lists all four. Nomad names Vodacom. Ringo Light rides a local partner network. Every network covers Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the main highways well. Signal thins out in the national parks, on mountain passes and on long stretches of the Garden Route and the Karoo, whichever eSIM you buy, so download offline maps before you drive.
The country has also lived through long spells of scheduled power cuts, called load-shedding. Cell towers run on backup batteries during a cut, and in a long one some of them go quiet. The EskomSePush app shows the schedule for the area you are in.
Installation, app and support
Holafly and Nomad both list their app as optional; Holafly installs from a QR code in your phone's settings. Ringo Light needs no app; the eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, and support is by email. A local SIM has to be registered under RICA with a passport and an address before it works; a travel eSIM installs at home before you fly and connects when you land at O.R. Tambo or Cape Town.
The cheaper third option: Ringo Light
Ringo Light is our own data eSIM. For South Africa it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $37.99 and 30 days at $66.99. One payment, nothing renews, no app.
What it does not do: no buckets, no 3-day or 7-day plan, data only. If you want 10 GB or 20 GB, Nomad at $18 and $29 is the better buy. If you want 3 to 10 days, Nomad at $19 or $37 is cheaper than anything we sell. For two weeks or a month of unlimited, Ringo Light is the cheapest of the three.

We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.
