1 · The short answer
Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2026 to 2027 starts with the Torchlight Procession on 29 December, continues with the Night Afore Party on 30 December, and reaches its peak on 31 December with the Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens. On New Year's Day, First Footin' is a free live music trail across venues in the city. The official programme is on the Edinburgh winter festivals site.
Most of it happens in a tight area of the Old and New Town, so the phone has to handle a ticket, a map, a meeting point and a long walk back in the cold. Ringo Light's United Kingdom plan covers Edinburgh and the rest of the country with unlimited data at full speed, arrives by email and installs in one scan. The UK is outside the EU roam-like-at-home rules since Brexit, so check what your home SIM does here.

2 · Getting to the city centre
Edinburgh Waverley is the main station, set between the Old Town and the New Town, so you arrive almost at the event. The airport has a tram into the city centre, and buses run from the airport to Waverley Bridge. Many visitors choose a hotel within walking distance, because the centre is busy on 31 December and the roads around the Street Party are closed.
Check the official Your Visit and FAQs pages for the road closures, the transport arrangements for the night and the exact gate locations. These can change from year to year and were not confirmed for 2026 when this page was written.
3 · Tickets and the gates
- ✓Buy from the organiser. The Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens are ticketed. Buy through the official Edinburgh winter festivals site, and be wary of resellers.
- ✓Free events. First Footin' on New Year's Day is free and unticketed. Look at the programme for the venues and times.
- ✓Save the ticket offline. Put your e-ticket in your phone wallet or screenshot it before you leave the hotel. A gate queue is the worst place to wait for a slow download.
- ✓Know your entry gate. Large events usually assign gates or entry points. Look at your ticket details on the official site, and check what you may bring in.
4 · Signal at midnight
At the stroke of midnight, the whole crowd picks up a phone, and the networks around Princes Street slow down. Calls and messages can take a while to send, and photo uploads often wait until the crowd thins. Agree a meeting point in advance, away from the busiest streets, and do not rely on a call to find each other.
Download offline maps of the centre and save your hotel address. Turn on location sharing with your group before the evening begins, since it keeps working at low speed better than a phone call.
5 · Cold, battery and getting home
Scottish winter nights are cold, and cold shortens battery life quickly. Keep the phone in an inside pocket, bring a small power bank and keep the screen dim. If your battery is low at 11 pm, put the phone into low power mode so that you still have a map for the walk back.
Taxis and ride apps are hard to get at midnight. Plan the walk to your bed, or a route to a bus or train that is running, before you leave.
6 · What to do around Hogmanay
Edinburgh has a lot within a short walk: the Royal Mile and the Castle, Arthur's Seat for a view over the city, and the museums on Chambers Street. For the first day of January, many visitors take a slow morning in a cafe and then catch live music at First Footin' venues.
