1 · The short answer

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lists its 80th edition for 6 to 30 August 2027. It is the largest arts festival in the world: theatre, comedy, dance, music, cabaret and spoken word in hundreds of venues, from purpose built tents to church halls, pub back rooms and underground vaults. The Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo run in the same weeks.

Ringo Light's United Kingdom plan covers Edinburgh and the rest of the UK: unlimited data at full speed, delivered by email, installed with one scan. At the Fringe you build your day on the move, booking shows from reviews and recommendations on the street, and that needs a phone that is online.

2 · Venues and hubs

Fringe venues are everywhere, but most of the action clusters in a few hubs around the Old Town and the university quarter: the Pleasance Courtyard, the venues around George Square, Bristo Square and its temporary structures, and the Cowgate below the South Bridge, where some venues are in centuries old vaults. The High Street section of the Royal Mile becomes a stage for street performers and flyering.

Each venue's address is in the Fringe programme, but some rooms sit inside larger buildings with their own entrances; save the venue details along with each ticket so you are not searching for a door with a minute to go.

3 · Tickets on your phone

  • ✓Booking. Tickets for most shows are sold through the Fringe website and box offices, as well as by individual venues.
  • ✓E-tickets. Many tickets can be shown on your phone; check how each venue wants them presented and save them offline.
  • ✓Free shows. Part of the programme is free or pay what you want, with a collection at the end; carry a card, since many performers take contactless.
  • ✓Planning. Saving shows on the Fringe site makes it easier to fit last minute recommendations around the ones you booked.

4 · Signal on the Royal Mile and in the vaults

In August the Royal Mile and the streets around the hubs are packed for most of the day, and the network around them slows, especially in the afternoons and on weekends. The bigger problem is underground: venues in vaults and basements often have no signal at all, so a ticket that only exists in an unopened email is a ticket you cannot show.

Open and save tickets before you go underground, pick a meeting point above ground, and carry a battery pack: a day of maps, bookings and photos across Edinburgh's hills drains a phone fast.

5 · Getting there and getting around

Edinburgh Airport is linked to the city centre by tram and by the Airlink bus. Trains from London and the rest of the UK arrive at Edinburgh Waverley, in the valley between the Old Town and the New Town, a short steep walk from the Royal Mile.

The centre is compact and most venues are walkable, though the hills and closes make distances feel longer. Lothian Buses and the tram take contactless payment, and the Transport for Edinburgh app has live times. Accommodation books out well in advance for August, and many visitors stay further out or in Glasgow, an hour away by train.

6 · Around the Edinburgh Fringe

The Fringe fills the Old Town and the streets around the university, with Arthur's Seat above it all.
