1 · The short answer

Semana Santa, Holy Week, runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, so the dates move with Easter and fall in late March or April. In Seville, brotherhoods carry heavy pasos, the sculpted floats, through the streets to the cathedral and back to their own churches. Each brotherhood has its own day and timetable, published by the city's council of brotherhoods and by the tourism office.

The shared route is the carrera oficial, the stretch every brotherhood passes through on the way to the cathedral. Streets around it fill up, and some processions cut across the old town in ways that block your way. Your phone is the timetable, the map and the way to meet people when a procession splits a group.

2 · What Holy Week looks like

Processions run from early afternoon until late at night, and some last through the small hours. Nazarenos, penitents in pointed hoods, walk ahead of the pasos, bands play, and the crowd stays quiet as a float passes. Be patient, do not walk through a procession, and keep your voice and phone light low when a paso goes by.

The night that runs from Thursday into Good Friday, known as the Madrugá, is the most crowded of the week. The council of brotherhoods publishes the order of the processions, and the times can change for rain, so check the day of.

3 · Getting around the old town

  • ✓Carrera oficial: The common route to the cathedral. Streets nearby close or restrict access during processions, and crossing it can mean a long detour.
  • ✓On foot: The old town is walkable and often faster than any vehicle. Plan your route around the processions rather than straight through them.
  • ✓Buses and tram: Services near the old town are diverted during the week. Check the city transport operator's notices for the current changes.
  • ✓Taxis and ride apps: Taxis work, but traffic is heavy and pick up points near the route are limited. Walk to the edge of the restricted area before you book.
  • ✓Trains and flights: Santa Justa station and Seville airport are busy in Holy Week; book ahead.

4 · What your phone has to do

Streets in the old town pack tight, and the mobile network slows in the busiest hours. Maps and messages should work; large uploads are slower. Download an offline map of Seville and agree a meeting point and a fallback with your group, because a procession can split people for an hour.

Keep the phone charged, turn the flash and sound off at processions, and carry a power bank. Cards and phone wallets work in most bars and shops, although a few small places still prefer cash.

5 · Apps worth having

  • ✓Council of brotherhoods: The official source for each day's order, timetable and route; look for its programme online.
  • ✓Google Maps: Walking routes in the old town; save the offline area.
  • ✓Taxi and ride apps: For trips from the edge of the restricted area.
  • ✓Weather forecast: A brotherhood may stay in its church if rain is expected, and the decision is often made late.
