1 · The short answer

La Tomatina is held on the last Wednesday of August in Buñol, a small town about forty kilometres inland from Valencia. The fight itself lasts one hour, around midday, and since 2013 entry has been ticketed and capped. The 2026 edition was on Wednesday 26 August; the 2027 date had not been published when we checked.

Buñol is a town of narrow streets, and on the day it fills with far more people than live there, so the local network is stretched before and after the fight. Ringo Light covers Spain with unlimited data at full speed; it arrives by email and installs in one scan, and works the same in Valencia, Madrid or Barcelona if Buñol is one stop of a longer trip.

Ringo Light's Spain plan covers the whole of Spain: unlimited data at full speed, 2 weeks for $14.99 or 30 days for $26.99, nothing renews. The plan is at ringoesim.com/spain, and every brand's price for Madrid is compared on one day in Best eSIM for Madrid.

2 · The crowd, the signal and your phone

The fight happens in the streets around the town centre, packed wall to wall. Signal is weak there in that hour anyway, and the bigger risk to your phone is tomato pulp and water: trucks unload ripe tomatoes, and residents hose the crowd down afterwards.

The safest choices are to leave the phone in a locker or with your bag, or to carry it in a sealed waterproof pouch on a lanyard around your neck. Do not try to film from inside the crowd with a bare phone. Your ticket confirmation should be on paper or on a second device if you need to show it while your phone is packed away.

3 · Tickets and what to bring

  • ✓Tickets are required. Entry to the fight area is by ticket, sold online in advance, and numbers are limited. Buy only from the official channel the town hall points to, and save the confirmation offline.
  • ✓Bring little. Old clothes and closed shoes you can throw away, goggles, a towel and a change of clothes for later. No glass bottles or bags in the fight area.
  • ✓Lockers. Lockers and bag storage are offered around the town; book one if you can, and put the phone in it.
  • ✓Paying. Bars in Buñol take cards, but small stalls may prefer cash. Keep a card and a few notes in the waterproof pouch with your phone.

4 · Getting there

Most people come from Valencia. Cercanías line C3 runs from Valencia to Buñol in about an hour, and extra trains usually run on the day; organised buses and tour packages also leave from Valencia. Valencia airport has flights from across Europe, and fast trains connect Valencia to Madrid and Barcelona.

Trains back to Valencia are crowded in the early afternoon. Check the Renfe app the night before, save the times, and do not count on looking them up in the middle of the crowd.

5 · Meeting points and safety

  • ✓Choose a meeting point outside the fight zone. Agree on the station or a named café and a time. Once the fight starts, nobody will find anyone by phone.
  • ✓Follow the rules. Squash tomatoes before throwing them, do not tear clothes, and stop when the second signal sounds the end.
  • ✓Heat. Late August in Valencia is hot. Drink water and find shade before and after.
  • ✓Emergency number. 112 works across Spain.
