1 · The short answer

Jakarta is where many trips to Indonesia start, and where the work is: a few days of meetings, a night between flights, or a posting of a month. We priced six travel eSIMs with an Indonesia plan on the same day and read what each one does once you leave the airport, with an hour or more of traffic ahead and your phone as the office.

4 · What to do in Jakarta, and what your phone does for it

Six places for a first visit or a free afternoon between meetings, from the national monument to the old Dutch port and a day out in Bogor, with the one thing your phone does for you at each. Coverage is strong across the city; traffic is the thing to plan around.

5 · Landing at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK)

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is in Tangerang, about 20 km west of central Jakarta, with three terminals joined by a free Skytrain. Install the eSIM at home over wifi and switch it on as the plane taxis: the immigration queue is the first place you will want a map, a ride or a message to the person meeting you.

Both ways into the city start on your phone. The airport train leaves from the Skytrain station and reaches BNI City, by Sudirman, in under an hour. Grab and Gojek pick up at marked points outside each terminal, and the app tells you which one; Blue Bird taxis queue at the kerb and book in their own app too.

Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP), in the east of the city, handles some domestic flights and is the Jakarta end of the high-speed train to Bandung. The same eSIM works there and everywhere else in Indonesia.

6 · Coverage in Jakarta, and when the network matters

Inside the city the choice of network barely matters. Telkomsel, Indosat and XL are all strong across central and south Jakarta and the business districts of Sudirman, Thamrin and Kuningan. What slows a Jakarta phone down is the building, not the network: deep malls, basement car parks and the back of a big hotel.

Leave the city for the Thousand Islands or the hills around Puncak and the network starts to count. Telkomsel has the widest reach in Indonesia, which is why Nomad and Saily ride it. Holafly lists XL and Telkomsel. Ubigi rides Indosat, which is quick in the city and thinner on the islands.

7 · A business week or a month in Jakarta: what each plan costs

A work trip to Jakarta is usually four to seven days, and that is where the rivals cost the most per day. Airalo asks $27 for 7 days of unlimited and Holafly $27.50. Ringo Light sells no 7-day plan, but its 2 weeks of unlimited at $22.99 costs less than either and still covers you if a meeting moves to next week.

For a posting of a month: Airalo $69, Saily $71.99, Holafly $73.90, Ubigi $59 for 60 GB at full speed, Ringo Light $35.99, nothing renews.

Read what unlimited means before you run a laptop off your phone between meetings. Airalo gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Saily gives 5 GB a day, Nomad 2 GB. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed.

For a night or two in transit, Ringo Light is the wrong buy: it sells no 3-day plan. Airalo sells 3 days of unlimited for $11 and Holafly for $11.90.

8 · Day trips from Jakarta

  • ✓Bogor. The botanical gardens, about an hour and a half south on the KRL commuter train. Good signal the whole way.
  • ✓The Thousand Islands. Boats from Marina Ancol and Muara Angke to the coral islands in the Java Sea. Signal on the inhabited islands, thin on the crossing.
  • ✓Bandung. The high-speed train from Halim takes under an hour; the cooler hill city has tea plantations and volcano craters nearby.

9 · If you want a data bucket instead

  • Ubigi, $16 for 10 GB. The cheapest 10 GB for 30 days, on Indosat with 5G, quick in the city.
  • Nomad, $19 for 10 GB. On Telkomsel, and 20 GB lasts 45 days for $33.
  • ✓Ringo Light, no buckets. Our 2 weeks is unlimited for $22.99 and our 30 days unlimited for $35.99. If all you need is email and maps for a month, Ubigi at $16 is the better buy.

10 · What Ringo Light is

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM, sold to fund the full Ringo, one plan that works everywhere with your own number ported onto it. For Indonesia it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $22.99 and 30 days at $35.99. Nothing renews. The eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, no app.

The card to buy it is further up this page, just after the side-by-side table.

11 · Pick by trip

One night in transit at Soekarno-Hatta

Airalo unlimited, 3 days, $11. Ringo Light sells no 3 days.

A business week in Jakarta

Ringo Light unlimited, 2 weeks, $22.99, less than the rivals charge for 7 days.

A month on a posting or a project

Ringo Light unlimited, 30 days, $35.99. Ubigi at $59 for 60 GB at full speed if you want Indosat.

Email and maps only, budget first

Ubigi 10 GB for 30 days at $16.

Your clients need to reach your own number

12 · Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM is cheapest for Jakarta?+
For a week or more, Ringo Light: 2 weeks of unlimited at $22.99 on 27 September 2026, less than Airalo ($27) or Holafly ($27.50) charge for 7 days, and 30 days at $35.99. For one or two nights, Airalo at $11 for 3 days.
Can I get online as soon as I land at Soekarno-Hatta?+
Yes, if you install the eSIM before you fly. Turn it on as the plane taxis and it connects to a local network at the gate, so the airport train, Grab or Gojek are ready before you reach the exit.
Do Grab and Gojek work with a travel eSIM?+
Yes. The apps run on data, and both accept a foreign phone number. The sign-up code arrives by text to your home number, so keep your home SIM switched on for that one message and check what your carrier charges for it.
Does my eSIM work on the Thousand Islands?+
On the inhabited islands, such as Pramuka and Tidung, usually yes; on the crossing and around the outer islands it comes and goes. Telkomsel reaches furthest, and Nomad and Saily ride it.
Do I need a different eSIM for Jakarta and Bali?+
No. Every plan here is an Indonesia plan that covers the whole country, Jakarta, Bali, Lombok and the rest, on one eSIM.

13 · How we compared, and our sources

We priced Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi and Ringo Light for Jakarta on 27 September 2026, all on the same day, in US dollars. Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.

We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.

Ringo Light is our own product. We put it in the table on the same terms as everyone else, and where a rival is the better buy the page says so.

Left out: Revolut. It sells Indonesia data plans from 1 GB for 7 days up to 100 GB for 60 days inside its banking app, for Revolut account holders only. Its website shows the plan sizes and a starting price in pounds, but no price per plan in dollars, and no unlimited plan, so it has no bar in the charts. Left out: Maya Mobile. We could not read its own prices for this country on the day, so it stays out rather than being guessed.

Written and priced by the Ringo team. Prices change often; if you spot one that has moved, tell us through the contact page and we will update the table.
