1 · The short answer
Holi, the Hindu spring festival of colours, falls on the full moon of the month of Phalguna, which usually lands in March. The evening before is Holika Dahan, when bonfires are lit; the next morning people throw coloured powder (gulal) and water at friends, neighbours and strangers. The date moves every year with the lunar calendar, so check the Government of India holiday list for the year you travel.
For your phone, Holi is the one day of the year when the risk is physical, not just a weak signal: powder gets into ports and speakers, and water balloons find everything. A waterproof pouch with a lanyard and offline maps solves most of it.

2 · Where to spend Holi
The Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan, linked to the stories of Krishna, celebrates for days rather than one morning. Barsana and Nandgaon hold Lathmar Holi in the week before the main day, and temples in Vrindavan host colour celebrations that draw huge crowds. These are religious events first: arrive early, dress in clothes you can throw away, and be prepared for very dense crowds.
In cities, Holi is mostly a neighbourhood and family affair in the morning, with ticketed Holi parties in Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur for visitors who prefer a managed setting. By early afternoon the colour stops, people wash and visit relatives, and the city goes quiet.
3 · Keeping your phone safe and connected
- ✓Waterproof pouch: A clear pouch on a neck strap lets you take photos through the plastic and keeps powder out of the charging port.
- ✓Offline first: Download maps and keep your hotel address as a screenshot; you will not want to open a wet phone in a crowd.
- ✓Crowds: In Vrindavan temple lanes and Barsana streets, tens of thousands of phones share a few cells. Expect slow data and send videos later.
- ✓Consent and safety: Colour is meant to be shared with consent. Women travellers in particular are advised to go with a group or a trusted guide in crowded places.
4 · Transport on Holi day
Many shops, restaurants and offices close on Holi morning. In recent years the Delhi Metro has started service only in the afternoon on Holi day; check the DMRC notice before you plan an airport transfer. Uber, Ola and autos are scarce until the colour stops, so arrange airport pickups in advance and avoid long road trips that morning.
For Mathura and Vrindavan, trains from Delhi to Mathura Junction take a couple of hours; book on IRCTC early, as the Braj region fills with pilgrims and visitors in the festival week.
5 · Which plan covers the trip
The Ringo Light plan for India covers every state on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed, enough for video calls home from the ghats or the bus back to Delhi. If India is one stop of a longer trip, the Global plan covers it along with the other countries on your route.
6 · Good places for Holi
Each place celebrates differently. Pick by how much crowd you want.
