1 · The short answer
The Melbourne Cup, run over 3200 metres at Flemington Racecourse, is on Tuesday 3 November 2026, the centrepiece of the Victoria Racing Club's four day Carnival. Cup Day is a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne, and the race stops offices and pubs across Australia when it starts in the afternoon.
Flemington holds a very large crowd on Cup Day, and everyone wants to post the finish at the same moment. Keep your e-ticket offline, know your train home, and expect slow data right after the race.
Ringo Light covers the whole of Australia on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email, installs in one scan and needs no app.
Dates: Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington. The Carnival runs Derby Day 31 October, Cup Day 3 November, Oaks Day 5 November and Champions Stakes Day 7 November. Organiser's page

2 · The Carnival days
- ✓Derby Day, Saturday 31 October: The Victoria Derby and the most formal dress code of the Carnival.
- ✓Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November: The Melbourne Cup itself, the biggest crowd of the week.
- ✓Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November: The VRC Oaks, traditionally a fashion focused day.
- ✓Champions Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November: The closing day of the Carnival.
3 · Tickets, entry and your phone
Tickets are sold through the VRC and delivered digitally. Download them before race day, add them to your phone's wallet if offered, and keep a screenshot in case the crowd at the gates slows your data. A charged phone matters: you will use it for tickets, betting apps if you choose, photos and your trip home. Bring a power bank.
With a full course, data slows around the main race and the trophy presentation. Messages still get through; video uploads can wait until the train.
4 · Getting to Flemington
- ✓Trains: On Cup Day, special services run to Flemington Racecourse station from Flinders Street and Southern Cross. The VRC lists the timetable; in 2026 the last train back leaves Flemington at 8.59pm.
- ✓Paying: Melbourne's public transport uses myki, available as a card or on a phone's wallet in many cases. Buy and top up at stations before race day.
- ✓Trams and walking: Trams run towards Flemington, and the course is a walk from parts of the inner north west.
- ✓Ride apps: Uber and DiDi operate in Melbourne. Pickup areas after the last race are very busy.
5 · Around the Cup
Spring is a good time in Melbourne: laneway cafés, the city's galleries and restaurants, and day trips along the Great Ocean Road or to the Yarra Valley wineries. Hotels are in high demand in Carnival week, so book early.
6 · Which plan covers the trip
The Ringo Light plan for Australia covers Melbourne, Sydney and the whole country on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. If your trip continues to New Zealand or Asia, the Global plan covers the countries on your route.
