2 · How documenta spreads across Kassel

documenta has never been a single building. The traditional heart is the Fridericianum on Friedrichsplatz, one of the oldest public museum buildings in Europe, with the documenta Halle a few minutes away and the Neue Galerie, the Karlsaue park and the Orangerie close by. Each edition adds its own sites across the city, from former department stores and factories to churches and riverbanks.

The venues for documenta 16 are announced by documenta as the opening approaches, together with the ticket types. Past editions sold day tickets and season tickets covering all venues; check documenta's own site for the 2027 rules. Keep tickets in your phone wallet and the venue list saved offline, since you will be crossing the city on foot and by tram.

3 · Signal in old buildings and parks

Kassel is not a city of crowded megavenues, and German networks cover it well. What weakens signal is architecture: thick walls in historic buildings, basements and former industrial halls where works are often shown. In the parks coverage is good, but on the opening days crowds in front of the main venues slow uploads.

Save the exhibition map and the city map offline, keep a battery pack for long days between venues, and send photos in the evening on hotel Wi-Fi or from outside rather than from a basement installation.

4 · Getting to Kassel

Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is the city's long distance station, on the high speed lines between Frankfurt, Hannover and Göttingen, with direct trains from Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Frankfurt Airport is the usual international gateway, with ICE trains from the airport station. From Wilhelmshöhe, trams run into the centre to Friedrichsplatz in a few minutes.

The DB Navigator app holds long distance and regional tickets. In Kassel the local trams and buses are run by KVG and part of the regional NVV network; a Deutschlandticket, if you have one, covers local and regional transport across Germany.
