2 · Getting to Churchill Downs

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is only a few miles from Churchill Downs, and many visitors also fly into Cincinnati, Nashville or Indianapolis and drive. On Derby Day, roads around the track are congested for hours; official shuttles, rideshare drop off zones and nearby paid parking are the usual options.

Save your rideshare pickup zone and your ticket gate before you go. After the last race, everyone leaves at once and phones near the track slow down, so agree a plan with your group in advance.

3 · Tickets and the official app

  • ✓Official tickets. Derby and Oaks tickets are sold on the official Kentucky Derby site, from general admission infield and paddock tickets to reserved seats and hospitality. Use only official sales or the official resale partner.
  • ✓Mobile tickets. Expect mobile tickets. Add them to your phone wallet the day before so they open without signal at the gate.
  • ✓Know before you go. Check the official FAQ for the bag policy, the dress code in reserved areas and items not allowed on site.
  • ✓Paying. Bring a card or phone wallet that works in the US without foreign fees, and check the official guide for payment and wagering options on site.

4 · Signal on a packed infield

Derby Day is one of the biggest one day crowds in American sport, and the infield and paddock are packed from the morning. Messages usually go through, but uploads and video calls slow sharply, especially in the minutes around the Derby itself and the singing of My Old Kentucky Home.

Agree a meeting point with your group, such as a numbered gate or a landmark, and send videos after the race. A small power bank helps on a long day, if the bag policy allows it.

5 · Louisville around the Derby

Derby week fills Louisville with events, from the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks two weeks before to the parade and the steamboat race. Downtown, the Louisville Slugger Museum and the Muhammad Ali Center are on Main Street, and the Big Four Bridge walk crosses the Ohio River to Indiana. Bourbon distilleries are spread across the city and the countryside nearby.
