1 · The short answer

Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year, falls on Monday 8 March 2027 on Indonesia's official holiday list. For 24 hours, from 6am to 6am, the whole island observes silence: no travel, no work, no lights, no noise and no entertainment. Visitors are expected to stay inside their hotel or villa, and traditional village wardens, the pecalang, patrol the empty streets.

Be clear about what this means for your phone. Bali's airport closes for the full 24 hours, and in recent years the authorities have asked mobile operators to switch off mobile data across the island for the day. That applies to every SIM and eSIM using Indonesian networks, including ours. Hotel Wi-Fi has generally stayed on, but plan to be largely offline.

For the rest of your trip, before and after the silence, Ringo Light covers Indonesia on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email, installs in one scan and needs no app.

2 · What Nyepi is

Nyepi marks the start of the Saka year. It is a day for self reflection, fasting and meditation for Balinese Hindus, built around four restraints: no fire or light, no work, no travel, and no entertainment. Hotels keep running for guests, but quietly, with curtains drawn at night and no music.

The days before are anything but quiet. In the Melasti ceremonies, processions carry temple objects to the sea or springs for purification. On the eve, the Ngrupuk parades carry ogoh-ogoh, giant effigies of demons built by each village, through the streets with drums and torches, before they are destroyed. The next day is Ngembak Geni, when families visit each other and life resumes.

3 · The airport, the internet and what still works

  • ✓Airport: Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for the full 24 hours. No flights land or leave; airlines move passengers to the day before or after.
  • ✓Ports: Ferries and boats, including to Lombok and the Gili islands, do not operate.
  • ✓Mobile data: In recent years mobile data has been switched off across Bali for the day at the request of the authorities. Expect no data on any SIM or eSIM on Indonesian networks.
  • ✓Wi-Fi: Hotel Wi-Fi has generally kept working. Keep screens dim and sound off out of respect.
  • ✓Emergencies: Hospitals and emergency services stay available. Keep your hotel's emergency number written down.

4 · How to prepare

  • ✓Arrive early or leave late: Plan to be in your hotel by the evening of 7 March, and do not book flights on 8 March.
  • ✓Download before: Films, books, offline maps and anything you need for work, while you still have data on 7 March.
  • ✓Tell people: Let family and colleagues know you will be offline for 24 hours.
  • ✓Food and cash: Most hotels serve meals to guests. If you are in a villa, stock up the day before; shops and ATMs may not be available.
  • ✓Eid travel in 2027: Eid al-Fitr is listed for 10 and 11 March 2027, so the days after Nyepi are a peak travel period across Indonesia. Book onward flights early.

5 · The ogoh-ogoh night and signal

The Ngrupuk parades on the evening of 7 March are the most crowded night in Bali's towns. Ubud, Denpasar and Kuta have large parades, with whole villages on the streets. Mobile data still works that night but slows in the crowds. Get back to your accommodation before 6am, when the silence begins; transport becomes scarce late at night.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

No mobile plan will give you data on Nyepi itself in Bali. For every other day of your trip, the Ringo Light plan for Indonesia covers Bali, Lombok, Java and the rest of the country with unlimited data at full speed, for Grab, Gojek, maps and messages. If you are continuing around Southeast Asia, the Global plan covers the whole route.
