2 · Potsdamer Platz and the other venues

The festival's centre is Potsdamer Platz, where the Berlinale Palast on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz hosts the competition premieres and the red carpet, with other screens and the festival offices close by. Screenings also run in cinemas across the city, from the Zoo Palast in Charlottenburg to the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and neighbourhood cinemas, so a day of films can mean several trips across town.

The European Film Market is based at the Gropius Bau, a short walk from Potsdamer Platz. Industry and press badges are applied for in advance through the Berlinale.

3 · Tickets on your phone

Berlinale tickets are sold to the public, mostly online through the festival website, a few days before each screening, as well as at box offices. Popular screenings sell out within minutes of release, so being online at the right moment matters, and a slow connection can cost you a seat.

Tickets are delivered digitally; keep them in your phone wallet or saved offline, and check the venue address before you set out, since screenings of the same film can be in different cinemas. The Audience Days on 20 and 21 February are a new chance to catch festival films after the awards.

4 · Signal, crowds and cold batteries

Berlin's mobile coverage is good, including most of the U-Bahn and S-Bahn. Around the red carpet at Potsdamer Platz on premiere nights the crowd slows the network, and inside the cinemas you will be asked to switch off anyway.

February in Berlin is cold, often below freezing, and phone batteries drain faster in the cold, especially while you wait outside in a queue checking ticket releases. Keep your phone in an inside pocket and carry a battery pack.

5 · Getting there and getting around

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is linked to the city by the FEX airport express and regional trains to Hauptbahnhof and Friedrichstraße, and by S-Bahn. From Hauptbahnhof, Potsdamer Platz is one stop on the S-Bahn or a short U-Bahn ride.

The BVG app and the DB Navigator app sell tickets and show live departures; a Deutschlandticket, if you have one, covers all local transport. The U2 and the S-Bahn connect Potsdamer Platz with Zoologischer Garten for the Zoo Palast, and taxis and ride-hail are easy to find around the venues.

6 · Around the Berlinale

Potsdamer Platz sits next to the Kulturforum, and Berlin's museums fill the gaps between screenings.
