2 · The crowd and the signal downtown

SXSW is not one field but a district: sessions in hotels and halls, showcases in bars on Sixth Street and Red River, screenings in theatres. The networks add capacity downtown, but evening crowds on Sixth Street, when the street is closed to cars and packed, are where data slows and calls drop.

Venue Wi-Fi exists but is often overloaded by a room full of laptops. A phone with unlimited data and a hotspot is the more reliable way to get a presentation or a demo online.

4 · Getting there and between venues

Austin Bergstrom International Airport is about twenty minutes from downtown by car, and CapMetro's airport bus runs to the centre. Hotels near downtown sell out early for the festival week.

Downtown is walkable, and scooters, bikes and pedicabs fill the streets. Rideshare pickups are moved to designated zones on the busiest nights, and surge waits are long: check the CapMetro app for buses and the MetroRail line, and allow time to walk between venues.

5 · Meeting points and safety

  • ✓Fix meeting points in advance. Name a hotel lobby or a café, not "the venue", and a time. On Sixth Street at night, calls are unreliable.
