1 · The short answer

Yogyakarta, Jogja to the people who live there, is the cultural heart of Java and the base for Borobudur, Prambanan and Merapi. Most visitors stay three to five days, often inside a two-week trip across Java from Jakarta to Bromo and Ijen. We priced six travel eSIMs on the same day and checked what each one does on the train, at the temples and on the volcano.

4 · What to do in Yogyakarta, and what your phone does for it

Seven places in and around Jogja, from the two great temples to the Sultan's palace, the volcano and the south coast, with the one thing your phone does for you at each. Coverage is strong in the city and at the temples, and thinner on Merapi and the far beaches.

5 · Arriving at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), or by train

YIA opened in 2020 at Kulon Progo, about 45 km west of the city, and took over most flights from the old Adisutjipto airport. The airport train runs to Tugu station, at the top of Malioboro, in about 40 minutes; by car it is a little over an hour. Switch the eSIM on before you land, because the train ticket and the ride both start on your phone.

Plenty of people come by train from Jakarta instead, six to eight hours from Gambir or Pasar Senen to Tugu or Lempuyangan, with tickets in the KAI Access app. Signal along the line comes and goes in the hills and holds in the towns, so download a film before you board.

6 · Coverage in Jogja, at the temples and on Merapi

The city, Borobudur and Prambanan are well covered by Telkomsel, Indosat and XL alike. Gojek and Grab work across Jogja and are the easy way out to Prambanan; for Borobudur, an hour north west, most people book a driver for the day.

The network starts to matter on the slopes of Merapi and along the Gunungkidul beaches in the south east, where Telkomsel reaches further than the others. Nomad and Saily ride Telkomsel, Holafly lists XL and Telkomsel, and Ubigi rides Indosat, which is quick in the city.

Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and the exclusion zone round it changes with the alert level. The government's MAGMA Indonesia service posts the current level; check it on the morning of a jeep tour.

7 · A few days in Jogja, or two weeks across Java: what each costs

For three to five days in Jogja alone, the short plans win: Airalo sells 3 days of unlimited for $11 and Nomad 5 days for $18. Ringo Light sells no plan shorter than 2 weeks.

Most visitors, though, are on a longer Java trip: Jakarta, Jogja, then east to Bromo and Ijen, or across to Bali. For a week, Airalo asks $27 and Holafly $27.50. For two weeks, Airalo $48, Saily $48.99, Holafly $50.50. Ringo Light charges $22.99 for 2 weeks of unlimited data at full speed, less than the rivals' 7 days, and $35.99 for 30 days. Nothing renews.

Read what unlimited means before you pick. Airalo gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Saily gives 5 GB a day, Nomad 2 GB. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed.

8 · Jogja inside a Java trip

  • ✓Jakarta. Six to eight hours by train, or an hour by air. Every plan here covers the whole route on one eSIM.
  • ✓Bromo and Ijen. East Java's volcano treks, both done in the dark for sunrise. Signal thins on the trails; download the routes before you set off.
  • ✓Bali. A short flight from YIA. The same Indonesia plan carries on working when you land.

9 · If you want a data bucket instead

  • Ubigi, $16 for 10 GB. The cheapest 10 GB for 30 days, on Indosat.
  • Nomad, $19 for 10 GB. On Telkomsel, and 20 GB lasts 45 days for $33.
  • ✓Ringo Light, no buckets. Our 2 weeks is unlimited for $22.99 and our 30 days unlimited for $35.99. If 10 GB has to last a month, Ubigi at $16 is the better buy.

10 · What Ringo Light is

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM, sold to fund the full Ringo, one plan that works everywhere with your own number ported onto it. For Indonesia it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $22.99 and 30 days at $35.99. Nothing renews. The eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, no app.

The card to buy it is further up this page, just after the side-by-side table.

13 · How we compared, and our sources

We priced Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi and Ringo Light for Yogyakarta on 27 September 2026, all on the same day, in US dollars. Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.

We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.

Ringo Light is our own product. We put it in the table on the same terms as everyone else, and where a rival is the better buy the page says so.

Left out: Revolut. It sells Indonesia data plans from 1 GB for 7 days up to 100 GB for 60 days inside its banking app, for Revolut account holders only. Its website shows the plan sizes and a starting price in pounds, but no price per plan in dollars, and no unlimited plan, so it has no bar in the charts. Left out: Maya Mobile. We could not read its own prices for this country on the day, so it stays out rather than being guessed.

Written and priced by the Ringo team. Prices change often; if you spot one that has moved, tell us through the contact page and we will update the table.
