1 · The short answer

The Venice International Film Festival, the Mostra, is the oldest film festival in the world and is run by La Biennale di Venezia. It takes place every year on the Lido, the long island between the Venice lagoon and the Adriatic, usually from late August into early September; the 2026 edition ran from 2 to 12 September. La Biennale has not yet published the 2027 dates, so check its site before you book.

2 · The festival halls on the Lido

The festival is concentrated around the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi, on the sea side of the island. The Sala Grande in the Palazzo hosts the competition premieres and the red carpet; the other screening rooms, including the Sala Darsena, the PalaBiennale and rooms in the former Casinò next door, sit within a few minutes' walk. The Venice Production Bridge, the festival's industry programme, is based on the Lido too.

Accredited press and industry book screenings through La Biennale's online system, and public tickets for many screenings go on sale on the Biennale site before the festival. Keep tickets and your badge on your phone, and save the screening schedule offline.

3 · Signal on a small island

The Lido is a quiet residential island for most of the year. During the festival its few streets around the Palazzo fill with guests, fans and photographers, and at premiere time the network around the red carpet slows down. Inside the larger screening halls, signal is weaker, and the festival asks you to switch phones off in any case.

Download tickets as soon as you book, set photos to upload later, and check boat times before you leave a screening. Late at night, when the last screenings end, services back to Venice thin out, and a live timetable saves a long wait at the pier.

4 · Getting to the Lido

Venice Marco Polo Airport is the gateway. From the airport the Alilaguna water bus and the ACTV boats reach the Lido, or you can take the bus to Piazzale Roma and then a vaporetto. Trains from Milan, Bologna and Florence arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia, where vaporetto lines run along the Grand Canal and around to the Lido.

Boats from San Marco and San Zaccaria reach Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta in about fifteen minutes. From there, buses run down the Gran Viale and along the seafront to the Palazzo del Cinema, and many visitors rent bicycles. Buy ACTV tickets in the AVM Venezia app or at the stop.

  • ✓Venice. The city is fifteen minutes away by boat for dinner, the Grand Canal and the museums.
  • ✓The Biennale. In years of the art Biennale, the Giardini and Arsenale exhibitions are open during the festival.
