1 · The short answer

Vivid Sydney, the city's winter festival of light, music and ideas, returns from 28 May to 19 June 2027, according to the organisers. Each evening, projections cover the sails of the Opera House and buildings around the harbour, light installations line walking routes, and drone shows have featured in recent years. The light walks are free; music and talks are ticketed.

Weekend evenings around Circular Quay and The Rocks are among the most crowded in Sydney all year. Trains and ferries are full, and mobile data slows where everyone stops to film. Go on a weeknight if you can, and keep tickets and maps offline.

Ringo Light covers the whole of Australia on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. It arrives by email, installs in one scan and needs no app.

2 · What to see

The light walk around the harbour is the core of Vivid: from the Opera House forecourt and Circular Quay through The Rocks and on towards Barangaroo, with installations along the way. Other precincts have included Darling Harbour and spots in the inner city; the organisers publish the map and the opening hours each year. The music and ideas programmes run in venues across the city, from the Opera House to smaller halls.

3 · Crowds and mobile signal

Australian networks are reliable in the city, but on Friday and Saturday nights the Circular Quay area holds a very large crowd, and everyone is filming the same projection. Messages work; uploads crawl. Film now, post later. The quieter time is a weeknight early in the festival, soon after the lights come on.

4 · Getting there and getting around

  • ✓From the airport: The airport train runs to Central and Circular Quay in under half an hour.
  • ✓Public transport: Trains, light rail and ferries run extra services during Vivid. Circular Quay station gets so busy that it can be quicker to walk to Wynyard or St James.
  • ✓Paying: Tap on and off with a contactless card or your phone's wallet; an Opal card is optional for visitors.
  • ✓Ride apps: Uber and DiDi operate in Sydney. Pickups near the Quay are slow on festival nights; walk a few blocks away first.

5 · Apps that help

  • ✓Transport for NSW apps: Trip planners such as the official Transport app show live trains, ferries and buses.
  • ✓Vivid map: The official site publishes the light walk map; save it before you head out.
  • ✓Payments: Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere in Sydney, including food trucks.

6 · Which plan covers the trip

The Ringo Light plan for Australia covers Sydney, Melbourne and the rest of the country on one eSIM with unlimited data at full speed. If you are combining Australia with New Zealand or Asia, the Global plan covers the countries on your route.
