1 · The short answer

The Carnaval de Barranquilla 2027 runs from Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 February, the four days before Ash Wednesday, with weeks of pre-carnival events from January. Saturday is the Batalla de Flores along the Vía 40, Sunday the Gran Parada de Tradición, Monday the parade of comparsas and music, and Tuesday the symbolic burial of Joselito that closes the carnival. UNESCO recognises it as part of the intangible heritage of humanity.

Along the Vía 40, the stands and pavements are packed for hours, and data slows when everyone films the same floats. Ringo Light covers Colombia with unlimited data at full speed; it arrives by email, installs in one scan, and covers Cartagena, Santa Marta and Bogotá too.

2 · The crowd and the signal on the route

The big parades run along the Vía 40, a long avenue by the Magdalena river, lined with stands called palcos. The crowd stays all afternoon in the heat, filming dancers, marimondas and floats. Messages and maps work, calls can fail and uploads wait until the parade has passed.

Save your stand ticket, your hotel address and a map of the route on the phone. Post the videos in the evening from the hotel.

3 · Stands, tickets and paying

  • ✓Stands on the Vía 40. Seats in the palcos are sold in advance through the carnival organisation and authorised sellers, by parade day. Keep the ticket saved and on paper.
  • ✓The official programme. The organiser publishes the full programme, including the pre-carnival events from January. Check it before you book your flights.
  • ✓Paying. Hotels and restaurants take cards; vendors along the route mostly want pesos in cash. Use ATMs inside shopping centres or banks.
  • ✓Ride hailing. Ride hailing apps and taxis work in Barranquilla; agree on pickup points away from the closed parade streets.

4 · Getting there

Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport is just outside Barranquilla, with flights from Bogotá, Medellín and a few international routes. Cartagena is about two hours away by road, and Santa Marta a similar distance in the other direction, so many visitors combine the carnival with the Caribbean coast.

Book hotels early: the city fills up for the carnival weekend and prices rise. Save your bookings offline in case data is slow on arrival.

5 · Foam, meeting points and safety

  • ✓Protect the phone from foam and flour. Spray foam and cornflour are part of the fun. A waterproof pouch on a lanyard keeps the phone usable and in your hands.
  • ✓Keep the phone hidden. Phone theft is a real risk in big crowds in Colombia. Do not hold the phone out at the edge of the route, and keep it in a front pocket or under clothing.
  • ✓Meet at a fixed point. Agree on a stand number, a landmark or a hotel lobby and a time.
  • ✓Emergency number. 123 is the emergency number in Colombia.

6 · Which plan covers the Barranquilla Carnival

Ringo Light's Colombia plan covers the whole country: Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Medellín and Bogotá. Coverage is limited in parts of Tayrona and the jungle, so download offline maps for those. Your own SIM can stay on for calls and codes.

7 · The Caribbean coast around the carnival

Barranquilla sits between Cartagena and Santa Marta, two of Colombia's great destinations.
