1 · The short answer

Ubud is the part of Bali where people stay longer: a yoga retreat, a month of remote work in a villa above the rice fields, a slow week of temples and waterfalls. That turns the eSIM question from the cheapest week into the most dependable month, with your phone as the backup when the villa wifi drops. We priced six travel eSIMs on the same day for exactly that.

4 · What to do in and around Ubud, and what your phone does for it

Seven places within half an hour of central Ubud, from the Monkey Forest to the ridge walk, the rice terraces, the waterfalls and the holy springs, with the one thing your phone does for you at each. Signal is good in town and on the main roads, and drops in the gorges.

5 · From Denpasar airport to Ubud

Every flight lands at Ngurah Rai (DPS), in the south of Bali. Ubud is about 35 km north, an hour to an hour and a half by car, and longer in the late afternoon traffic. Switch the eSIM on before you land and you can book the car, message your villa and pay Bali's tourist levy online, through the official Love Bali site or app, without hunting for airport wifi.

Grab and Gojek pick up from the airport's marked zones. In central Ubud some streets carry signs that bar app pick-ups in favour of local drivers; walk to a bigger road, or ask your hotel for a driver. Many villas sit at the end of narrow lanes between the rice fields, where the car stops and you walk the last stretch, so share your villa's pin with the driver, not just its name.

6 · Coverage in and around Ubud

Central Ubud, Penestanan, Sayan and the roads north to Tegallalang have good 4G on all the main networks. Coverage drops in the river valleys, down in the Ayung gorge below Sayan and the deeper waterfall canyons, and in villas tucked behind the rice fields. Telkomsel reaches furthest into those corners; Indosat and XL are quick in the centre.

Nomad and Saily ride Telkomsel, Holafly lists XL and Telkomsel, and Ubigi rides Indosat. If your villa is down a valley, test the signal on your first evening, before you rely on it for a call.

7 · Working from Ubud: your phone as the backup line

Most villas and coworking spaces in Ubud have fibre, but power cuts and wifi drops are part of life here, more so in the rainy season, roughly November to March. Unlimited data on your phone is what keeps a video call going when the router goes dark.

That is where the fine print on unlimited matters most. Airalo slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day, Saily after 5 GB, Nomad after 2 GB. Ubigi gives 60 GB at full speed for the month, then 2 Mbps. Holafly states no daily cap for your own phone and limits sharing to 1 GB a day. Ringo Light is unlimited data at full speed.

8 · A retreat, a month, or a week: what each plan costs

A month in Ubud: Airalo $69, Saily $71.99, Holafly $73.90, Ubigi $59 for 60 GB at full speed. Ringo Light charges $35.99 for 30 days of unlimited data at full speed, nothing renews.

A seven to ten day yoga retreat: Airalo asks $27 for 7 days and Holafly $27.50; Nomad sells 10 days for $33. Ringo Light sells no 7-day plan, but its 2 weeks of unlimited at $22.99 costs less than any of them.

Passing through for two or three nights: Ringo Light is the wrong buy, it sells no 3-day plan. Airalo sells 3 days of unlimited for $11.

9 · Day trips from Ubud

  • ✓Mount Batur at sunrise. About an hour north by car, then two hours up in the dark with a guide. The trail has weak signal in places; download the Kintamani area offline.
  • ✓Sidemen. A quieter valley of rice terraces under Mount Agung, about an hour east. Telkomsel holds best on its back roads.
  • ✓Jatiluwih. The widest rice terraces on the island, part of the UNESCO listed subak landscape, about an hour and a half west.

10 · If you want a data bucket instead

  • Ubigi, $16 for 10 GB. The cheapest 10 GB for 30 days, on Indosat, enough if the villa wifi does the heavy lifting.
  • Nomad, $33 for 20 GB over 45 days. On Telkomsel, for a retreat longer than a month with light phone use.
  • ✓Ringo Light, no buckets. Our 2 weeks is unlimited for $22.99 and our 30 days unlimited for $35.99. If 10 GB will last your month, Ubigi at $16 is the better buy.

11 · What Ringo Light is

Ringo Light is our own data eSIM, sold to fund the full Ringo, one plan that works everywhere with your own number ported onto it. For Indonesia it sells two trips, both unlimited data at full speed: 2 weeks at $22.99 and 30 days at $35.99. Nothing renews. The eSIM arrives by email in seconds and installs in one scan, no app.

The card to buy it is further up this page, just after the side-by-side table.

12 · Pick by trip

A month of remote work in a villa

Ringo Light unlimited, 30 days, $35.99, your backup line when the wifi drops.

A week-long yoga retreat

Ringo Light unlimited, 2 weeks, $22.99, less than the rivals charge for 7 days.

A long retreat, light phone use

Nomad 20 GB for 45 days at $33, on Telkomsel.

Two or three nights on the way through

Airalo unlimited, 3 days, $11. Ringo Light sells no 3 days.

Clients at home need your own number

None of these travel plans does that. The full Ringo, which Ringo Light funds, ports the number you have.

13 · Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM is best for remote work in Ubud?+
For a month, Ringo Light: 30 days of unlimited data at full speed for $35.99 on 27 September 2026. The rivals' 30-day plans cost $59 to $73.90 and slow down after a daily or monthly amount.
Is mobile data good enough for video calls in Ubud?+
In central Ubud, Penestanan and Sayan, 4G on the main networks usually carries a call. In villas down in the river valleys signal can drop, so test it on your first evening. Telkomsel reaches furthest into those corners.
How do I get from Bali airport to Ubud?+
By car, about an hour to an hour and a half from Ngurah Rai, longer in late afternoon traffic. Book Grab or Gojek from the airport's pick-up zones, or have your villa send a driver.
Do I need a different eSIM for Ubud than for the rest of Bali?+
No. Every plan here is an Indonesia plan that covers all of Bali, the Gilis, Lombok and the rest of the country on one eSIM.
Will the monkeys at the Monkey Forest take my phone?+
They can. The macaques grab anything loose, phones and sunglasses included. Keep your phone zipped away or on a wrist strap, and if one takes something, ask a keeper rather than pulling it back.

14 · How we compared, and our sources

We priced Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi and Ringo Light for Ubud on 27 September 2026, all on the same day, in US dollars. Each rival's price comes from its own website where it showed dollars, otherwise from an esimdb.com listing, and every source and its date is listed below. Ringo Light's prices come from the catalogue our checkout charges.

We compare the trips people actually book: a week, two weeks and a month of unlimited data, and a 10 GB bucket. We read each brand's fair use and speed rules and quote them as the brands state them. We did not run speed tests, so this page makes no speed claims for any brand.

Ringo Light is our own product. We put it in the table on the same terms as everyone else, and where a rival is the better buy the page says so.

Left out: Revolut. It sells Indonesia data plans from 1 GB for 7 days up to 100 GB for 60 days inside its banking app, for Revolut account holders only. Its website shows the plan sizes and a starting price in pounds, but no price per plan in dollars, and no unlimited plan, so it has no bar in the charts. Left out: Maya Mobile. We could not read its own prices for this country on the day, so it stays out rather than being guessed.

Written and priced by the Ringo team. Prices change often; if you spot one that has moved, tell us through the contact page and we will update the table.
